> How was that vacation?
It was great! We were travelling by car from Germany through Poland (alongside the coast of the Baltic sea) to Lithuania, then to Latvia and finally to Estonia, spending around one week in each Baltic state, travelling zigzag-style from west to east and back, slowly heading northward, oscillating between the coast of the Baltic sea and the (Belo-)Russian border! Finally we took a ferry from Tallinn to Helsinki and from there, taking another ferry, back to Germany!
Among lots of others, one highlight was the beach at the Kurische Nehrung (which was part of Germany until the end of WWII, and belongs to Lithuania and Russia now), which was perfect white sand and nearly no people anywhere around, continuing that way around 50 km in both directions! The kids loved it!
Too bad that it is still not possible for EU residents to travel to/through Russia without a very expensive and complicated visa! We would have loved to travel directly through Kaliningradskaja Oblast (the nothern part of the former East Prussia around its former capital Königsberg, which is now Kaliningrad), so we would not have to travel around it to reach Lithuania from Poland (although the southern route was fine too, so we started in the south of Lithuania).
If we would have had a little bit more time, we also would have loved to visit St. Petersburg (having friends from Russia living there) for a few days (which is a bit easier to visit than Kaliningrad, because there's a special kind of visa which is less expensive and more flexible). Maybe next time!
