TAS diagonal key

Got a cool idea that should be in R'n'D? Let's hear it!

TAS diagonal key

Post by ncrecc »

when playing a BD level with diagonal movement enabled in single-step mode on keyboard, it can be hard to move diagonally from a standstill (i.e. after the move delay has passed), as you need to press both arrow keys at (more or less) precisely the same time, otherwise you move in one of the orthogonal directions instead.

my idea to help with this is a key that, while held, masks away all non-diagonal directional inputs. so if you're trying to move precisely diagonally, you can hold the "diagonal key", and then any directional inputs will be ignored until you're holding two at once in a diagonal direction. ideally this would also work in the same way with the TAS snap keys.

Very good point indeed -- currently it is next to impossible to do diagonal movements in single step mode.

I think your idea using an additional, special key makes sense. Maybe it could also work in an even more generic way, to use it as some sort of "delay key" that simply delays processing all key input while that key is held down, being able to press some other keys, and processing those keys when the "delay key" is released. Just like your suggestion, it would require some semi-acrobatic skills (as you would have to press four keys ad once for diagonal snapping, for example (but diagonal snapping is probably already an acrobatic task anyways), but at least it would be a way to make this work.
