The forum's search function doesn't seem to work

I can go to search.php or use the search bar in the top-right, but when I try entering a search query, it loads for a moment and gives me HTTP error 500.

Argh! Indeed I've just noticed that searching the forum on the new web server is slooooooooooooooooooooooooooow.

Installed that f*cking PHP module (why is this not mentioned as a requirement for phpBB3 ???).

Now it works blazingly fast for me again!

Post is from 2018-09-26 and doesn't give a commit link, and I know nothing about phpbb release cycle -- would that fix be expected to be in the version you're running right now? Otherwise, apparently it is 'fixed in future'.

But current workaround also works.
