Re: Abysm - my own BD inspired game
hmmmm. Makes me wonder if that is in fact a coincidence, or actually something sinister. Imagine someone has a way to view upcoming releases on Steam, and monitors it, and issues trademark applications for names which haven't yet been trademarked by the game author. Then they sit back and relax, do...

Re: Abysm - my own BD inspired game
Oh, was there already another game named "Abysm" on Steam? Not quite... but 10 days before the release of my game a trademark application for the name in the area of "gaming software" became public, and by amazing coincidence I found it only four days later. After some deliberat...

Re: Abysm - my own BD inspired game
Hello Again! The Portsmoor Abysm is now out on Steam, with a tweaked name to avoid some unfortunate complications. https://store.steampowered.com/app/4025180/The_Portsmoor_Abysm/ It's a game inspired by Boulder Dash as I remembered it from my childhood (turns out, somewhat vaguely), but with a cosmi...

Re: Abysm - my own BD inspired game
Hello! The Abysm demo is now out on Steam, making it really easy to try it out, at least if you are as well: https://store.steampowered.com/app/4119340/Abysm_Demo/ It's available for Windows and Linux, and one of the reasons it is on Steam in the first place is to make it easy to play on the Steam D...

Been hard at work and Abysm now has a Steam page with capsule art, a new trailer, a wishlist (hint!), and all those things:

Re: Abysm - my own BD inspired game
Or would you consider not changing it? After all, it seems like a behavior that is unique to Abysm, and unique/special behaviours are a good thing for standing out from the herd of BD clones! Keeping it was certainly an option that was on my mind, this exactly is the kind of stuff that somebody cou...

Re: Abysm - my own BD inspired game
Just wanted to note that Abysm now has the most critical of features for any BD-like, an idle animation:

Not saying it's inspired by anything in particular or anything.

Re: Abysm - my own BD inspired game
I posted an updated version of the demo, and this time Ive made a couple of critical tweaks to the Pale Queen level, borrowing a contraption from further into the game. The goal was to make the level feel less frustrating if you have to restart, and more in line with my general puzzle ethos that onc...

Re: Abysm - my own BD inspired game
Grid based "physics" can easily get a bit funny at time... I didn't predict my sliding ice boulders would be able to behave like this:

Interesting, but I think I want to change that before any of my levels depend on this behavior...

Re: Abysm - my own BD inspired game
Very, very good game! Great atmosphere! Cool pixel art graphics! Generally very well done! Thanks a bunch! Had to wake up whatever long dormant skills all those hours with Deluxe Paint as a teenager bestowed upon me. Amiga pixel art in a non-purist way is probably the general vibe I'm trying for. P...

Re: Abysm - my own BD inspired game
Thanks! I will try to run it in a Windows VM, as I only have Mac and Linux at hand now. I gave compiling it for Linux a try, installed WSL2 and all that, but to no avail so far. Will have to try again at a later time. I could say the same about R'n'D with regard to Boulder Dash and Emerald Mine. :) ...
