So where are the level files that are loading?

Post by Lee Brewer »

This is somewhat related to my last post.

I asked where the level files are stored and was told (on a Mac):

Documents/Rocks'n'Diamonds/levels.

I have a set I named TRON_2018.

I put them in there and they load/work/play great. Except one thing...

Where in the world are the level files themselves such as 001.level, 002.level etc?

Why ask?
Let;s say I like my 042.level the way it is, but have an idea for changing it to something hopefully better.

Steps:
1. go into level folder
2. duplicate 042.level and rename duplicate as archive042.level
3. load the game and edit the fle named 042.level knowing I can always default back if I mess it up.

With the .level files not inside the level folder, I can no longer do this.

IMO, the game should not be loading and playing the files anyway since they are not there?! Or has something changed in this version I recently downloaded (Rocks'n'Diamonds 6.09.40 PM)?

Below is a pic of the loaded and working levels as well as the directory pathway:

I right clicked the Rocks'n'Diamonds icon and hit "show package contents."

So why are the .level files inside there, not inside the documents folder, and yet have a reference to the level name inside the documents folder?

I am quite confused about what you have written here. Therefore, some questions that may shed some more light on it! :)
[...] in this version I recently downloaded (Rocks'n'Diamonds 6.09.40 PM)?
From where do you have downloaded this version of the game? Regarding the official versions of "Rocks'n'Diamonds", there is (and never was) a version "6.09.40 PM"!

The latest official R'n'D version is version 4.3.6.0, and it can be downloaded from https://www.artsoft.org/ .

I am even more confused about the level set called "TRON_2018" you are talking about:
I have a set I named TRON_2018.

I put them in there and they load/work/play great.
So you mean that you have put this level set into the directory "Documents/Rocks'n'Diamonds/levels", is that correct?

But you cannot find any level file? But then you found the level files in the directory "Applications/Rocks'n'Diamonds 6.09.40 PM.app/Contents/Resources/levels/Tron_2018"?

This is inside the program's application package (which is not created by me)! So apparently this level set was already bundled with the version of the game that you have installed. I wonder from where you got that package -- do you remember this, maybe even knowing from which web site (if any) you got it?

And from where do you have that level set "Tron_2018"? It looks like this set was both bundled with your version of the game, and you also additionally installed it in the usual levels directory ("Documents/Rocks'n'Diamonds/levels"), but apparently it is missing the level files (but plays anyway, as it was already part of the main game package).

All very strange!

As a package of the game from a third party source might be arbitrarily broken (at least if you encounter problems), it's probably best to install the latest official version of the game from the official web site (https://www.artsoft.org/). :)

Now I also am very confused b/c I downloaded only from artsoft.org.

However, my grandsons were playing with the machine, game, and my levels. It could be they were, for some reason, monkeying around.

Simple solution is I will just save my levels in a file (and another I want to keep), and then wipe and re-install the program by downloading from artsoft again. I have no doubt this will fix it all.

This will maybe take a few days though before I can get back to it.

Thanks for the help.

Ah, yes, kids playing around explains many strange things! I know this for sure from my own kids! :D

So, yes, installing an unmodified version from the latest official package will hopefully clean things up! (And regarding the old package that maybe was messed around with, just renaming it instead of deleting it should also do it, so you are not in danger of losing any data or level sets that maybe found their way into the package directory, so you can later access level sets in there, if needed.)

Please let me know if everything works as expected with a newly installed game package! And I will be happy to help you if there should be any questions or problems left. :)
