Recently I've been browsing http://happypenguin.org/ and just for fun I decided to sort games by date of addition and check which one was first. And guess which one it is...

Well, although Rocks'n'Diamond is now available for Linux since 1995 (ten years?! I can't believe it!), and available at happypenguin.org since 1998, it is for sure not the first game for Linux. ;-)

Even if you might not count good old classic Unix games which are a bit simpler (but great), like "xmahjongg", there is at least one real Arcade style game, which was there before R'n'D (and which I liked to play on my Linux box in the old days): "xboing", which is a Breakout/Arkanoid clone, which made quite good use of Xlib features these days and looked quite polished. In fact, if I remember right, I had some looks into the source code for porting MirrorMagic from the Amiga to Linux, which was also the early code base for R'n'D. And when I just think about it: MirrorMagic was available for Linux since 1994! :-)

Some interesting and funny facts about MirrorMagic and R'n'D can be found here, btw:

I especially like the part about the telnet account to the nuclear research center, which was indeed no joke, but true. :-)

Yeah, I was kidding of course. We all know that the first games for Linux were
fortune - the predecessor of recent Soldier of Fortune
and
bash - the caveman game where you needed to bash dinosaurs in the head with a big club.

And don't forget the two classic text adventure games "Installing SLS Linux from 40 5,25" floppies" and "Configuring and building Linux kernel 0.99pl8". :-)
