Mario-style gravity?

So, how would I make a different type of gravity, like the kind in the Mario games, where the player shoots up a few spaces, and goes down again? It'd also need to bounce up after landing on an enemy. Is that even possible?
I think it could be done, but I haven't the slightest idea how.
If anyone has accomplished this, or has info about it, that would be very helpful!
