Stuck at level 1 of BD2K3 !!!

Hello,
did anyone encounter a problem with BD2K3 at this level (level 1) ?
The puzzle doors do not let the little man pass throught them when the piece is put in its place.

Level 2 is unsolvable too: nowhere to go, invisible walls blocking the passage.

I am using the latest Rock'n'diamonds version.

Strange -- I've just tested this, and it works just fine.

Also no problem here.

Please check out the (included) solution tapes for these levels, as follows: Go to the main menu, eject the current tape (if one is inserted) and (blindly) type ":insert-solution-tape" or just ":ist" to insert the solution tape. Play it with the "play" button to see how it solves the level.

This should show you how these two levels can be solved.

We may not be using the same versions i guess.

I tried the saved solutions for level 1 (the little man dies) and 2 (this little man was trapped because of the invisible wall)

The saved tapes date is septembre 13th 2003

I got my binary for Rock'n'Diamonds from this site. Same for BD2K3 levels.

Do you have others links for binary/levels ?

For the test mentioned in my previous post, I used the last (actual) official release R'n'D version 3.2.6.1 and BD2K3 version 1.0.0, both extracted from the official packages as they can be downloaded from my web site.

Just tried the solutions for level 1 and level 2 again, with the same (successful) result.

Not sure what may be the reason for the problems you encountered.

Could you please do the following:
- rename the program package folder (where the game was extracted to)
- install or extract the newly downloaded R'n'D program package again
- rename the folder "Rocks'n'Diamonds" in your personal files folder
- extract the newly downloaded BD2K3 level set package again
- try again to re-play the solution tapes for levels 1 and 2

Does anybody else encounter similar problems with those BD2K3 levels and the latest version of R'n'D? In any case, it would be nice and helpful if anybody else could test these two level solutions on his own system and report the result here!

No problems whatsoever at this station.

However, the time gate switch on level 2 is making the default RnD sound when it didn't use to.

Ok, so it works now.

What i did now differs in the following:

1. I installed the application (installer) and did no unzip it as before
2. I copied BD2K3 directory under levels directory, and not under level/Classic_Games as i did before.
3. I let it install in Program File directory instead unzipping it in a directory of my own before

So i really don't know which point made it work...

Anyway thanx guys for this wonderful game. I still consider it as a sequel to Commodore 64's Boulder Dash, a game i liked very much

I use RnD unzipped in a non-Program Files folder and I have not had a problem with it yet. But everyone's configuration will be different and there might be all sorts of possible subtle errors...

But regarding your second point - I did have the same problem as you described if I overrode the level graphics. Perhaps that was the cause before?

Yes, this caused the problem! (Step (1) and (3) should make no difference.)

So what happened here?

The directory "level/Classic_Games" is not a level set, but a level group which contains some level sets itself. The level configuration file ("levelinfo.conf") for this level group contains one important directive:

latest_engine: true

This directive is also valid for all level sets inside this level group, and it makes sure that the latest game engine is used for all level sets inside this group. For the classic games this is used to make all changes and corrections also available for these levels, to make them more compatible. For sets like BD2K3 (and many others), it is likely to break some levels, therefore the game engine version used to create these levels is also used to play these levels, instead of the very latest game engine version. Only for converted classic levels it is useful to use the very latest game engine.

(So you could have copied BD2K3 to more or less any level group without problems, just not the level group "Classic Games". I consider this a bug in my level set structure: I should use the directive "latest_engine: true" directly inside the level set it is intended for, but not in the level group configuration above.)

Could you describe this in more detail? This seems to be a different problem, but also sounds like something that should be fixed.

... and not to forget:

These thanks go to Alan Bond, who created this great reverence to the classical Boulder Dash game! :-)

The "thanks" were meant for all of authors/programmers of Rocks'n'Diamonds and its different level sets :) Alan and yourself included of course

I do not thank you for the tip of playing the "solution" tape because my 4 year old son now wants to see the little man move alone and win :)

I know exactly what you mean! ;-D

Although my own little son (2 years old) does not (really) play R'n'D yet (he had a little try with Snake Bite recently), he likes to watch somebody else playing it (or watching solution tapes somebody started for him)! :-)

Perhaps the solution tapes could be made into a TV show for kids. :)

Definitely; the BD2K3 tapes especially would make a good adventure series with episodes such as:
"Rockford in the Diamond Factory" (ep. 105)
"Rockford Makes his own Maze" (107)
"Rockford Wins a War" (110)
"Rockford Saves the Pengiuns" (115)
"Rockford Escapes the Enemy Spaceship" (116)
and so on... :D
