Prompt to restart upon player dying

Got a cool idea that should be in R'n'D? Let's hear it!

Prompt to restart upon player dying

Post by ncrecc »

This was suggested a while ago by "MichaelCPalmer1980" in this topic, and I thought it was worth implementing in all versions, Android and PC.

What I'm thinking of is an option in the Setup menu to show a prompt like this whenever one of the players in the level dies:

Where pressing "yes" would restart the level from the beginning, and pressing "no" would take you back to the menu.

There could also be another setting that automatically restarts the level upon dying in the case that locating and pressing "yes" would take time out of the gameplay (which seems to be the case in the Android version), and perhaps a key that just restarts the level without having to die first.

This issue is indeed one of the next things to be implemented, especially as it already works that way in the Mirror Magic game engine, and things should be consistent and work similarly regardless of which game engine is used.

And yes, there will most probably be a new option in the setup menu to enable or disable it for those who prefer the previous behaviour.

Not sure about these ones. While I think that a key shortcut to immediately restart the level would be a nice and useful thing (although it wouldn't work on Android/iOS without using a keyboard), automatically restarting the level upon dying seems to be a bit too much for me, especially as with a "play again?" request it only takes one key press (enter/return key) to restart the level in this case (also with a little bit more effort on Android/iOS where you have to touch the "ok" button, although at least on Android it's quicker and easier to just use the "menu" and "back" buttons on the device for the "yes" and "no" widgets rather than touching the right pixels on the screen).

Way back in the day of Apple ][ games... ctrl-R was 'restart [game or level or whatever]' in almost all games. Also ctrl-S was 'toggle sound'.

ctrl-R is congruent to modern browsers' 'reload page', so should be familiar to most users...

Since I am playing to Solve Puzzles, not to demonstrate my nonexistent finger agility, what I want to do upon dying is replay the last run up to where I went wrong, definitely not restart the level from scratch! But I can see some people would want that...

Normally I like to TOGGLE PAUSE with SPACE key when things get close. However, if I get too close and 'die', the SPACE won't TOGGLE PAUSE instead it'll go back to the menu, denying me from looking at whatever just happened. It'd be nice if SPACE were to still TOGGLE PAUSE even after death.

If there's a prompt it shouldn't be too easy to accidentally pick the an option.

To go back to a previous game state, you can click on the STOP button [] then click on the PLAY button |> (several times for different speeds), then the PAUSE button || when it gets to the spot you want to restart at, then press record () to start playing again. Complicated, when you just want to go back a few steps. There is a save state you can use, and go back to.

WARNING: There maybe software bugs with the save states(like, If you want to be able to continue from a state after restarting Rocks'n'Diamonds, make sure you're stopped when you make a save state), and you may have to start over from an earlier state using above method, and it is easy to mess up in doing this. Tapes might get messed up along the way; to verify that the tape works play back the tape from start not a saved state.
(method might be a little different if you have different CUSTOM ARTWORK setup then me)

In the game XYE you can go back a state with the DELETE key. (BACKSPACE for this might make more since, like in typing). Although there's no going forwards, and no save points other than the last state with XYE. [try saying this going forward grammatically, what tense is it? Past's Future Tense?... After going back, to see what you had done after the point you have gone back to ] It would be nice if Rocks'n'Diamonds also had this back to the last state feature in addition to it's[Rocks'n'Diamonds] save and restart at a state feature, and continue from a playback state feature.
Life is partially trying to strike a balance between generating new things/ideas, and making sure they are good/organized. These extremes can be said to between gibberish mess and nothing said/done.

I run all of R'n'D's 'tape buttons' from the keyboard, and I'm not at all confused about what they do and how to operate them. I was talking about my play tactics & how I want the software to accommodate them.

Having built 4.1.1.1, I now have the prompt-to-restart feature. I found it intrusively annoying, fortunately there was a setup toggle to turn it off, so it's all good...
