Rocks N Diamonds in 3-D?

Got a cool idea that should be in R'n'D? Let's hear it!

There was a 3D version of boulderdash under development on the Amiga (a copy of it is posted on my website at http://amiga.emucamp.com/emerald/b/boulderdash3d.html ) However, I never really investigated it and don't know if it was ever finished - personally I think that 2D games should remain that way, there are plenty of games that were great in 2D and absolutely suck when made into a 3D version (take Lemmings for example).

This is the readme description from Aminet:
Short: Collect gems in 3D cave! AGA/020 (fixed)
Author: szulat@pozn4v.put.poznan.pl (Szymon Ulatowski)
Uploader: szulat@pozn4v.put.poznan.pl (Szymon Ulatowski)
Type: game/demo

This is the demo version of a new 3D game. The rules of the game are like in
old good Boulder Dash 10 years ago: collect diamonds and find the exit. You
will have to face brand new obstacles in the 3D version and the game gives
new features: view from the player's position, flying, bombs. The program
contains review of the characters appearing in the game and a recorded
example of a contest. You can try your skills just on one level in this
version. More levels and other attractions will be available in the full,
comercial version.

I've just been browsing on Google and came across another 3D version of boulderdash from First Star see: http://www.firststarsoftware.com/GuardianQuest2003.htm See also: http://www.firststarsoftware.com/boulderdash.htm

> All the 3D field would only have to be x*y*1 (x map-width, y lenght, 1 is hight).

x*y*1? So, which dimension is the "1"? Horizontally? Would Rockford fall down then or not? Or vertically? In which direction do rocks fall then?

> Anyways a game, that is in 2D and will get to 3D, is a perfect thing !

Still sure about that?

I wouldn't mention this Holger  ..... don't forget that BD,SP,EM are all based on a really stupid perspective.

The very 1st time I saw BD, I thought "well it's a maze game with a top down view". Then I noticed some elements had gravity!!

So if there is gravity, does this mean Rockford is flying?

But if he isn't flying, does this mean it is a top-down view and it's boulders can only move South?

For some reason nobody has mentioned this..... mayby your are all in denial?

The only BD clone I have seen that manages to work around this silly idea, is Bone Cruncher on the C64. It's boulders could move up,down, left and right, and it had no gravity.

not all 2d games can be 3d and not all 3d games can be 2d.

Example:
People tried to make 3d tetris games! I hate them!

Example:
Ghost Recon in 2d? sounds crazy!!

I don't think boulderdash can be a good game in 3d. You have to see the area around you and that good old sense will be lost! Maybe Holger is able to do it, but take this piece of advice: don't do that!

Holger, I mean it could be like this:

And not the whole game has to be 3D. Maybe nearly all levels 2D and some 3D.

Heh, I never said anything because the selective physics are fundamental to the Boulderdash puzzle experience, not to mention it's just another 80's video game with ridiculous physics. I suppose it gets even sillier with gravity ports.

That was exactly what I meant.

BD/EM/SP style games simply don't work in 3D, because you would expect more "logical" physics there. (And of course it is fundamental to BD style games to "look through walls", or more precise, to see what's around you. It just don't work in a 3D world.)

I had a dream once... I was playing a 3D BD game!
And no. It was't anything like this one. It was
wonderful! Imagine a 3D square. This square
was divided up into sections and smaller squares.
I used the mouse to toggle to view, and I used my
sidewinder to control the miner. The level was not only
on the surface of the square, but inside of it... And whenever
you finished a layer, it would blow up! (kind of like tetris)
It was real neat. But I doubt anyone would take the time
to make something like that. :(

Sorry for refreshing this topic, I want to someone look at 3-D Rockford which create Alan.

It's the example for create the 3D R'n'D Graphics and public it.

The levelsets which graphics go to 3D Dimension are: BD2K3 and (proably) Snake Bite.

if Alan can create this it can (proably can) create 3D graphics for R'n'D it can go work!
