Wrap-around scrolling

Post by Alan »

Wrap-around scrolling isn't hard to make, but it is kind of tricky to make with minimum CEs and be practical to (and fast). This example only uses 8 CEs and doesn't get in the way (its just a border). The map can be any size you like.

Level 1 is just a basic screen, level 2 includes free space checking (only wrap if its clear on the opposite side) and level 3 is an infinite sized map!

Wow!! Great creation you got there, its almost like that this one is a feature
on DC series... (Diamond Caves)

I think the thrid level needs a little work on feeling like a never ending maze,
but good!

And great job on this example! :D

WOW!! :-o

Very well done! :-)

I also have experienced with these techniques! :-)

Of course, it works best with "delayed scrolling" set to "off" in the "setup / graphics" menu.

It's even possible to create endless mazes where you cannot notice the "wrap-around" at all! (Alan's example still has that one auto-moving line in level 003 where you notice that something unusual is happening... ;-) )

You know, I never have delayed scrolling enabled....maybe I should test things more with different settings.

Delayed scrolling just makes the game harder IMO (being closer to the edge gives you less reaction time)
