I can go to search.php or use the search bar in the top-right, but when I try entering a search query, it loads for a moment and gives me HTTP error 500.

Argh! Indeed I've just noticed that searching the forum on the new web server is slooooooooooooooooooooooooooow.

Found this one: https://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopic.php?t=2439031

Installed that f*cking PHP module (why is this not mentioned as a requirement for phpBB3 ???).

Now it works blazingly fast for me again! :D

https://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtop ... #p15098661 claims to have rewritten the problematic phpbb code so it will be fast even without mbstring php module. Post is from 2018-09-26 and doesn't give a commit link, and I know nothing about phpbb release cycle -- would that fix be expected to be in the version you're running right now? Otherwise, apparently it is 'fixed in future'.

But current workaround also works.

I have a very long search load, I tried to do it according to your advice, but it gave nothing.
