CYANITE, ALSO KNOWN AS DISTHENE OR KYANITE, IS A BLUISH ALUMINOSILICATE, FOUND IN ALUMINUM-RICH METAMORPHIC PEGMATITES AND SEDIMENTARY ROCK. THE PRESENCE OF KYANITE INDICATES DEEP-CRUST METAMORPHISM, AND IS USED BY GEOLOGISTS AS AN INDEX MINERAL TO TRACE METAMORPHIC ZONES. RAW KYANITE IS USED IN CERAMICS AND ABRASIVES.  
  
KYANITE CAN ALSO HAVE A LIGHT GREEN HUE IN LIEU OF THE BLUISH TINT, WHICH IS USED IN THE ORIGINAL ADD3 VERSION OF THIS CAVE (#55AA55).  
  
THE MOHS HARDNESS OF KYANITE IS BASED ON THE STRIKE OF THE AXIS. WHEN STRIKING ALONG THE LONG AXIS, THE MOHS HARDNESS IS ABOUT 4.5; HOWEVER, IN PERPENDICULARITY, IT IS ACTUALLY ABOUT 6.5. THIS ANISOTROPISM HELPS IDENTIFY KYANITE SPECIMENS.
