most of the caves in dangerdash 5 are more or less reprises from caves distributed here, but there were some exceptions, which I'll be pushing in small increments. I also made 'level 6' versions of a few notables.

25-08-21 20:56Rob Gilbert

Thanks for the opinion! I guess I'll pick it up a bit later, especially if it goes on sale eventually.

25-08-21 19:25altermaven

as an added note: I did have to make some.. concessions when helping port dangerdash vol.01 to modern. helping them debug their bdcff interpreter, resorting to map for a few caves to make requisite changes, make concessions.. overall, I'm rather pleased with how things turned out.

the biggest challenge is trying to port brain delicacy. there was a lot of involved nuances that just didn't really fully translate.

25-08-21 19:22altermaven

it's not 100% and it seems to more or less be problematic of the core it's built on (unity..) but the modern has been rather fluid. AFAIK they're still trying to iron out the specifics but they won't be able to exactly replicate all of the nuances of classic bd.

25-08-21 16:55Rob Gilbert

So, what do you think about the 40th anniversary game? i haven't purchased it yet, but judging what i see on the videos and by the demo, i sure like the modern part of the game (which is sort of its own deal), it looks nice and plays nice too, but the implementation of the classic games seems slightly off. I'm sure most people won't notice, but some of the minor details are definitely... different. Like, timings, explosions (possibly), it also looks like you can't really snap-activate the exit. i think the fan games are still king when it comes to implementing classic bd.

Happy Boulder Dash 40th Anniversary release day!

25-07-29 14:14altermaven

Dangerdash vol.5 is now on the gamebase! thanks Arno!

25-07-05 19:13dustin

cool! i like surprises :d

25-07-01 02:53altermaven

coming out of the blue, dangerdash vol.05 has been released. :D

25-06-27 12:05darkwood

krissz, Thanks you

25-06-27 10:38krissz

darkwood: Thanks the bug report, it is fixed!

25-06-26 13:19darkwood

Hi! When I want to search in database caves by creator on drop-down list I can see only names till 's' letter, currently last on shredder.
krissz, It's a bug? or there is another possibility to do this search?

25-06-11 14:56altermaven

oh snap, the word is out haha
I went with dangerdash 1 because it didn't involve any border trickery and it had that very "plays like classic boulder dash" feel. though, I did have to make some concessions when having it conveyed in modern terms. so expect a few differences between this and the original.

25-06-11 14:28dustin

that sounds good! on the official site, i even found july 10 as release date?!

unfortunately, it seems i was too late offering myself for game testing and/or cave contributions, but i'm glad to see caves from Arno and altermaven in the demo version, so our community is obviously well represented :)

25-06-10 19:27altermaven

boulder dash 40th anniversary is launching 24 july on various systems. source: official

25-04-30 22:17dustin

well i thought about it, but i don't want to commit myself to visiting this year's gamescom at this point. if there will be a bd event there, it would definitely be a good reason to visit it, but it's still some 400km away from me, so i'm not sure yet.

25-04-28 02:29dustin

darkstoorm: yup, the gamescom is a yearly event in cologne, germany. this year, it will be from aug 20-24.

i've never been there before, actually. i don't consider myself an especially great player either, but it might be possible for me to go there this year. independant of the competition, it'd of course be great to meet someone from our community there! just a rough idea so far :d

25-04-27 17:48DarkStoorM

krissz, Rob Gilbert: That's a local event in Germany (I think), right? I won't be able to attend, sadly :(

Still Would be fun to watch though if anyone records it!

25-04-27 17:28Rob Gilbert

Personally I'm definitely not good enough to compete at that level, but If either darkstoorm or nesdori joined, I'm pretty sure we'd have a winner FROM THIS community :D

25-04-27 09:03krissz

I got this question:

"We are considering to host a Boulder Dash World Champioship at this years gamescom exhibition. Do you think within your Boulder Dash fan group we could find great Boulder Dash players who would be interested to join the competition?"

So, anybody?

25-04-15 10:15altermaven

"do not deviate too much from the original plan." that's all I am saying..

25-04-12 13:58dustin

krissz, i know i'm quite late with this, but i would participate in the bd 40th beta testing too (if my old laptop can take it - worth a shot, i guess)! :)

25-04-11 13:57darkwood

Hi!

krissz, if this is still relevant, I would like to participate in the beta testing of the BD 40th edition

P.S. it seems that the problem with ISP routing and my online access to this site was resolved on April 9th, so far it works without VPN. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

25-04-03 06:47kozelX

i am very interrested too, thank you

25-03-25 21:14krissz

kaosikon, I have lost your email address. Please write me something to info@krissz.hu and I will send the details about bd 40th.

25-03-24 20:21kaosikon

Boulder Dash 40th anniversary version? Definitely interested! Looking forward to hearing more about it! :-)

25-02-02 14:14heywood

i can absolutely verify that i would be interested. :)

25-01-31 18:33altermaven

I cannot verify nor deny my position here.

25-01-31 16:05krissz

Would any of you be interested participating in the beta testing of the Boulder Dash 40th Anniversary version? Or even making caves into it?

24-12-30 16:09altermaven

will there be a finale for 2024? I just did 22 of them, if you haven't known ;)

see you on the flipside!

24-11-13 18:19dustin

a new episode about dancing fly formations is on Arno's site! it's about the following caves:

"a nest of 7 fflies" by nesdori
"dff 33 a nest of 2+5n ΖΖΖΖ" by me

have fun :d

24-11-01 16:47altermaven

wonder how "crowded" the doubled version of cave K will be ;)

24-10-18 14:05altermaven

oh snap, we got contacted by someone at BBG in the forums. And he seems very impressed by our community. I hope he does us justice with boulder dash 40th :)

24-10-06 22:36dustin

for dff fans
------------

episode 20 of the dancing fly formation thread at Arno's forum is out! it includes a detailed explanation of the following caves:
| my caves "dff 30-32"
| nesdori's older cave "new 6-fly dff:s"
it's quite a long article - enjoy it :d

24-10-05 12:50altermaven

more b-sides monday.

24-09-26 09:46altermaven

oops, I forgot to add the titlecard to dangerdash 4. that's been fixed.

24-09-26 01:13altermaven

Dangerdash vol.4 was released. bdgb push soon. it's late. pillow soft.

24-09-10 23:14altermaven

Removed 09C while I figure out something else.

24-08-29 20:12altermaven

We never did make a name for the "T" structure that uses the amoeba and slime to restrict amoeba change, did we?

let me call it the "t-strike". The reason I use 'strike' is because a strike is often used as a penalty term, and activating this mechanism 'strikes you' for doing so, by making the firefly smack the voodoo.

24-08-23 15:46altermaven

Taken down the "t" in the method series since I'm just going to retool the entire cave, which would warrant for more than just an edit

this means I will be pulling another name out of the bag

24-08-02 17:04dustin

for all fans of dancing fly formations:
---------------------------------------

after 4 years of pausing, a new episode in Arno's forum thread "dancing fly formations explained" is published! enjoy it :)

24-07-09 01:56altermaven

if any of the caves from the "factor" series is to be purposed in videos, just use the subtitle or list it as "factor: (name)".

24-05-26 17:46altermaven

repurposing the current stripes dx because I didn't like how things progressed in diagonals.

24-05-06 02:20altermaven

in re: prismatic hue shift series.

The minimum shift in hue to trigger representation of primary and secondary colour is 6 (by incrementing hue value by 60). However, there are certain nuances when it comes to drawing more specific colors out of the spectrum in terms of shifting.

the maximum amount of shifting in canonical steps is 24, which is double the resolution of what I went with (a 12-slice, or a 30-step). I say canonical step, because it includes both the teritary (30-step) and secondary (60-step) colors in position.

However, it is theoretically possible to commit a 18-slice (20-step) when designing hue shifts, but it isn't canonical because we bypass the odd-numbered tens going between secondaries. IT does make for a more subtle flow without having to commit to granularity, though.

Something I should test when I get back into designing caves. I'm on hiatus right now.

(this blurb may or may not be influenced by one of dustin's posts about an upcoming caveset ;) )

24-03-28 00:10altermaven

you don't really need 8khz for precision in bd, 1khz rate is more than enough. the only time you would want more precision is for the people who play games at 144hz+, and I'm very certain this isn't the demographic.

plus, those keyboards tend to be rather expensive for the package.

24-03-27 21:47DarkStoorM

darkwood: to be honest, 1khz is more than enough unless you plan on playing very fast caves. Whenever I play BD, I just take my 1khz keyboard, because on regular 125hz you will lose inputs, which is annoying :D
I also have a bluetooth 60hz keyboard (1khz wired), and it's even worse :D

To give you a reference, on fastest BD cave speed, you don't lose any inputs on 1khz, I also tried on my local clone with 14 speed, works perfect. 8khz is "an overkill" in my opinion - and probably a waste of CPu resources on slower machines

24-03-27 20:59darkwood

Good day, Community.
Is anyone considering the Wooting 80HE keyboard which the manufacturer claims supports True 8kHz Polling Rate not only on the USB-C port, but also on the keyboard PCB for better experience to playing BD?
https://wooting.io/wooting-80he

does anyone have any thoughts on this?

24-03-25 23:22altermaven

that sounds like no1's 16-game bd where you could pick "surprise me!" and it would pull caves from all from that disk. I am intrigued as to how that works.
(bd1-3 official w/ no one's patches, bd4 watson, bd5-9 pedro, boulderhead 1, and no1's 1-5 on that disk)

24-03-25 22:21dustin

hi, i have a question about how "delight bd" by no1 works.

as i understand it, there are 45 seperate "delight" games from no1, and then he published "delight boulderdash 1-2" which generates different caves every time it's played.

so if, for example, i start to play "delight bd 1", my first cave could be cave a from "delight 4", then next could be cave b from "delight 13", then cave c from "delight 7" and so on? do i understand that right?

it works similarly with "prima bd", i think?
thanks for help! :)

24-01-04 22:57dustin

happy new year everyone :)

24-01-01 19:31Piter

happy new year! hope it will be better than 2023 and worse than 2025 ;-)

24-01-01 15:40darkwood

merry christmas and happy new year!

23-12-31 23:57DarkStoorM

Happy new Year from Poland! Another banger year with the BD community :D

23-12-31 12:59altermaven

Correct. option P just creates a randomizer of caves, and that randomization of caves remains as long as the game persists. but in the no1 16 format, each game has five levels (as opposed to the standard 1-level that no1's caves and boulderhead had).

23-12-30 19:54dustin

ah, that's how it works, thx altermaven! so then it's still true that "game p" has no own caves.

23-12-30 08:55altermaven

No, option "P" will shuffle caves from all the games listed. this means cave A could be BD3/a, cave B could be No1-3/B, Cave C could be BD9/c, etc...

23-12-29 19:55dustin

happy holidays, and hopefully you all had happy xmas! :d

i have a question about no one's 16 bd game:
am i right that if game p is chosen in the title screen, then a random game from a-o is chosen? so there are actually "only" 15 bd games in this compilation?

23-12-24 21:09DarkStoorM

Happy HOlidays! ;D Another banger year for ^

23-12-24 10:47altermaven

happy holidays from the alchemyst. be safe out there.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all of you and your loved ones.

...and Rockford forever!

23-12-01 13:00altermaven

don't know what I would do for season festivia III, but all I know is that it probably won't be another tree.

23-11-03 09:36altermaven

dangerdash 3 had a minor update, I've adjusted "nambulite" to have the same less-intense red as the b-side of the cave on this site. that way, it won't be as much of a sore now, even though the levels don't last long.

23-11-03 01:33dustin

Kozelx: yes, why not? that'll surely be interesting! :)

23-10-30 16:56kozelX

i should konvert more caves from rox, there are plenty of good ideas

23-10-30 09:53Arno

my pleasure; i like the cave a lot! :-D

23-10-29 19:49kozelX

great Arno !

23-10-29 16:28altermaven

Arno is!

who is maintaining @BoulderDashFan youtube ?

my level is there, thank you :)

23-10-26 12:26altermaven

Taking a break before I post the M-z flips, about two weeks, due to other things going on. so dustin can keep with the no one's boulder updates :)

23-10-23 16:45altermaven

the following minerals from add3 will not be repeated since they were represented during this site's version of minerals a-z, and that they were duplicates (and b-sided respectively):

| indicolite
| quartz
| ussingite
| xonotlite
| yugawaralite

23-10-22 11:07altermaven

I have a better idea for the b-side to "halite", I just need to build it. but I wanted everyone to see the unique gimmick to the "h" in add3 :)

23-10-20 22:56altermaven

that was one of several games I had access to growing up so I figured I'd give pointers about that game :)

23-10-20 21:58dustin

altermaven: YOU'RE WELCOME :) ALSO, THANKS FOR YOUR HINTS ON "impossible mission". :)

23-10-18 19:15darkwood

nesdori, thanks! have a LOGITECH KB WITH CHERRY MX BROWN SWITCHES, SO IT WILL BE INTERESTING TO COMPARE THEM WITH THE ROMER-G SWITCHES...

23-10-18 17:30nesdori

darkwood, logitech g810 (usually :)

23-10-18 15:42darkwood

nesdori, please tell which keyboard you use to play bd?

23-10-13 13:22altermaven

thanks dustin for nagging revvv about the inclusion of dangerdash 3, i was just about to do that, but i see i don't have to :)

for the people here: i will eventually get add3 pushed here but with the exception of the caves that were effectively cloned due to the minerals a-z. but these versions are going to be slightly different, as a nod to the 'b-sides' edition of the very first alchemyst dig I pushed here.

talk about a throwback :D

23-09-27 19:49krissz

nesdori:

I had to implement the cycle perfect emulation for all of the chips (CPU, VIC, CIA chips) because this is the only approach what could work. The problems what you have noticed belongs to the sprite handling. I will rewrite this part completely. Every day I learn a lot (that's why I started to develop this emulator) so time to time I have to rewrite something. As I wrote in the info box this is a developer version yet.

I have to do lots of simplifications because of the enjoyable running speed but I do this by insane optimizations instead breaking the correct emulation.

Most of the problems are far-far deeper than the cycle perfect emulation. I have to handle the special cases of a special case of a special case... Mostly hardware bugs or unclear and undocumented timing issues... But this is an amazing project I think.

Yes, the last few months was completely crazy for me. Currently I know ten times more about the C64 than 4 months ago and I feel like who absolutely doesn't know anything. :)

The plan is the following:
- fixing these annoying and inscrutable issues
- implement the 1541 drive emulation and D64 handling
- experimenting with WebRTC for online multiplayer gaming

All:
If you have an idea how can I take the advantages of the online platform for this emulator, I welcome your feature requests!

23-09-27 11:24nesdori

krissz, great job with the emulator! :) especially if you started from scratch are made all of this in two months :O

you probably are already aware of this but there seems to be vic-ii emulation related quirks in some games. for example, sprites in "exploding fist" shouldn't have empty raster lines between them. i wonder if this has something to do with the "badline" raster line emulation. do you emulate vic-ii workings cycle by cycle during the bad lines and emulate the state of eac-, address- and irq buses cycle wise or do you use some kind of simplication to deal with the bad lines?

23-09-26 01:24altermaven

dustin: the goal of impossible mission is to search furniture for 36 fragments of punch cards, which then must be assembled, 4 at a time, to create the "password" that opens up the control room so you can stop the professor from setting off a nuclear bomb.

game starts at 12:00, ends at 6:00.
Connecting for hints regarding the punch cards spends 2 minutes.
Dying spends 10.

you can also get "passcodes" from searching:
- snooze: disables all robots in the current room for about 2 minutes.
- lift init: resets all lifts in the current room to their starts.

One room has a "soundboard" puzzle that you must repeat in increasing pitch. This is optional, and serves to give you bonus snoozes and inits.

good luck, agent.

23-09-25 22:11dustin

krissz: very nice :d i randomly tried the game "impossible mission" but i had no idea where to go haha :d

23-09-25 14:19krissz

Piter: you can turn off the sticky key "feature" easily.

The ctrl key would be worst because some of the browser shortcuts are hardcoded and I can not handle. For example in two player mode the second player uses the WASD keys then the ctrl+W together close the browser tab...

The SPACE key is also reserved by lot of C64 games... The ALT key is handled by the Os...

Considering all of these, I decided that the SHIFT keys are the safest.

But anyway, you can configure.

23-09-25 14:11altermaven

if you are having trouble with sticky keys, the option to turn that off is in windows accessability.

23-09-25 13:51Piter

of course it turns on sticky keys, not off.

23-09-25 13:50Piter

krissz, very nice :-) what i would change is default right shift as fire. If you play on windows it turns off sticky keys when you press it consecutive few times. better would be right control :-) besides that i am truly impressed! great work!

23-09-25 12:04enrico

thanks krissz!

23-09-24 08:55krissz

Few months ago I start to develop a new Commodore 64 emulator for web browsers from scratch in native javaScript. It is under development but I have published so everybody can use it:

https://ty64.krissz.hu/

Also, I have created more than 200 game pages (based on this emulator, except my few old javascript remakes). The list of the available games is growing day by day, here is the index:

https://c64.krissz.hu/online-playable-games/

Just click and play. Have fun!

23-09-23 17:10dustin

thanks for the link Kozelx! :d

23-09-22 18:39kozelX

dustin: no problem

rox is very nice, but little different rules

there is my web with all caves maps and downloads
https://kokes.krcma.cz/rox/

23-09-22 00:33dustin

Kozelx: sorry for spelling your name wrong.

23-09-22 00:32dustin

enrico: that can sometimes happen. i once accidently uploaded a cave with more ΑΑΑ required than available, and my first gdash game had unplayable level-5 caves because i didn't test them properly (greetings to american action) :d (everything fixed meanwhile)

kozalx: i didn't know that game, but it looks very interesting, and freeqare, cool! thanks for the hint, i'm gonna try it out :d

everyone: since kozalx just uploaded more than 10 nice classic caves from Firefox, should i still upload no one 11 this weekend, or do you think it's enough classic caves for this week? any opinions? :d

23-09-21 18:32kozelX

does anybody here try safrosoft Rox game ?

23-09-20 16:01enrico

thanks darkstoorm, every now and then I fall asleep!

23-09-20 15:32DarkStoorM

enrico, I think for now the best way is to just check the "last commented caves", which will be at the top when new comments appear

23-09-20 12:00Piter

enrico no need to apologize :-)

23-09-20 00:10enrico

Tonight I read messages for the cave krissz torure dash 3 flip v. It was a coincidence because I had the wrong line in selecting a cave.

Without that mistake the answer would not have been there for a long time or perhaps never, and sorry when for a mistake in the construction phase the cave becomes unplayable.

Wouldn't there be a possibility to recall the title of the cave for which there is a new message with a flashing flag next to the title?

Thank you as usual for your attention. A warm greeting.

23-09-15 17:56altermaven

Dangerdash 3 will use rgb colours, which is a departure from the normal c64 nature, since I needed more flexibility in designing the colour schemes. You'll understand once the caveset takes form :)

23-09-07 10:11dustin

:)

23-09-03 09:13enrico

Two words to express a sincere thanks to krissz for the commitment with which he carries on this wonderful site. And thanks without distinction to all those who with their creations give us daily moments of serenity and high-level mental exercise. Have a nice day, friends!

heywood: actually, breath of the wild isn't my favorite zelda game, it was just a reference that came to my mind quickly :d

my fav is still "a link to the past", my childhood rpg for super nes :) still have it, both an snes and the game :d

botw is nice, but a bit too much open world exploration for my taste. i prefer the classical dungeons!

25-12-08 21:53heywood

your second favourite zelda game?

25-12-07 14:32dustin

having escaped the big yet narrow maze, Κ hears a distant, familiar noise. following the noise, he finds another note lying on the ground before him.

'welcome to my greenhouse! your task here is to make it past all the growing mass! for this, i have a horde of blast-ended skrewts prepared for you, but make sure to hide somewhere safe during the action! in the end, however, you will also have to use your brain to solve the final challenge! and, yes, the bonus is a bit random this time, literally, because it can be trivial or impossible depending on chance! that's how you deal with wild plants, don't expect to predict them completely, that's the breath of the wild! now get to work, don't just stand there! greetings, professor shout. p.s. beware of the starting gun!'

no sooner has Κ looked up from the note than a deafening explosion happens directly before him. he's dazed at first, but then he spots a faint glitter behind the smoke. needless to say there was no holding back anymore - curtains up for a new adventure! :d

remark: the bottom half is highly inspired by Arno dash 9 cave 4!

remark 2: bd1 i/infinity is finally finished, so the series will soon continue! i considered uploading it today, but then i thought that we already have a new expert cave from Arno to crack, so i uploaded this comparatively moderate cave first ;)

Thanx and well done!

Indeed, during design i discovered, from modulo 8 on, that actually 2 frames "worked". So i placed voodoos above to enforce one of them.

Also interesting, how to create the correct delay, in particular at the beginning, since some of the very short delays are not possible to create, and there are too little diamonds/boulders in the pool to add modulo x to it.

The bonus challenge to get all diamonds adds even more restrictions...

Last note, my run is probably far from optimal, so for the highscore hunters, there are, at least in theory, various ways to outscore my run... ;-D

25-12-06 23:29dustin

ah, and of course, the cso-ish "handovers" among the ΖΖΖ are a very nice bonus :d

25-12-06 23:23dustin

ha! still "in time"! :d

95 percent of the solution was paperwork, defining a specific frame close to the end of the Ζ's journey (or, more precisely, the ΖΖΖ's relay race) as frame 0 and then working backwards, all modulo 64. all to figure out the exact delays between the Ζ "handovers". then another big part was to figure out how to actually set these exact delays in the ΒΒΒ-ΑΑΑ-boxes. i worked out some formulas but sometimes they weren't sufficient so i combined them with trial-and-erroring. in one word, it was a lot of fun! :d

the pure gameplay was actually a lot easier than in episode 1 because Κ isn't in a hurry as he doesn't have to walk through the ΖΖΖ area himself :d

i haven't tried for all ΑΑΑ, though, this would be a completely new thing, less math-y, more gameplay technique-y :d

25-12-06 20:27dustin

hi Helena and thx :) guess i wanna do some fun math before even attempting to play this cave :d

Thank you dustin, greetings to you too! This cave I have enjoyed watching the making of, looking forward to all your solutions (and I got a sneak peek of Arno's)?

Happy birthday, Arno! thanks so much for the inspiring caves! :)

25-12-06 16:39Arno

thx so much dustin! :-D

25-12-06 16:31dustin

i'd like to finish this cave then say "happy birthday" and comment on the cave in one go. but... i guess i will probably not be able to finish the cave while your birthday is still actual! so let's make seperate comments :d

happy 44!

or, as my father would put it, happy 45th birthday! (he likes to count one's actual day of birth as 1st.) i mention this because with this counting, your birthday number is the square root of the year :d

and thank you so much for your bd website! if i hadn't discovered it during my studying time, i would probably only have some faint memories left about my childhood game. as it is, it's... a little different :d

hope you have a good day, and greetings to Helena!

25-12-06 16:06Arno

the successor of my previous cave, now with timing modulo 2, 4, 8, 16, 32 and 64. plus, another way of preparing the delays, where the timing is the main goal, and leaving no diamond behind a bonus challenge! :-)

this is my birthday treat for ya all, enjoy! :-D

25-11-30 11:23dustin

starting this year's christmas season with Arno's xmas game from 2004! :d

actually, one main feature of the game is the special xmas graphics, but even without that, it's surely a nice game to have here at this site :)

from what i've played so far, the difficulty is mixed - this first one is surely more about the shape than about difficulty ;)

solutions that were unintended in the design are always nice to see, especially if they provide a big score bonus. my favourite was darkstoorm's major shortcut in my 'sulphur town' cave. :)

- the vault -

still having fun searching for the best random seed for the "bd1 infinity" series :d

i'm looking for seeds where no more than 99Α are possible, to stay compliant with the bd1 engine two-digit limit.

this one (random seed 94) was a candidate on my list... until i found a way to break into a "vault" with a lot of extra ΑΑΑ inside!

the requirement of 100Α is not the maximum, but it is necessary to find and break into the "vault" for it!

inside the vault, there are so many extra ΑΑΑ that not all of them are required!

this is a remake of dustin's bd25 cave p.

the idea is to keep the Ζ in the box as long as possible.

open question: is the 120th Α possible to get?
--------------

my demo shows the 119Α solution we already figured out in the original cave.

other 119Α solutions are welcome as well!
in particular, nesdori commented that he's found four slightly different 119Α solutions - i'd love to see them (and Arno said he would too)! :d

slow speed to make solutions easier to perform. and a high reward for the last Α! :d

i actually like the mathematical nature of the question if 120Α are possible!

ah, and btw: yes, my sleeping rhythm is slightly off today - i fell asleep on the couch after dinner and woke up at 1 a.m. luckily there's the weekend ahead :d

i mean this tab has been open in my browser for about two years now but I clearly have a lot of historical as well as technical knowledge to catch up on. :D

25-11-19 19:00dustin

"of course" this is in the cso series as well:

"cave scanning order 20 lv2"
"cso 114 the amoeba's ambush" - here the effect has to be avoided for success (by luck)
these are the caves i remember, anyway ;)

there are two other fancaves in my head too, one from Arno, one from rta dash, but i don't recall them exactly.

25-11-19 13:44heywood

very comprehensive and very clear, thank you!

25-11-19 12:34nesdori

when a fly is scanned, first it checks if there's something next to it which will cause it to explode (Κ or amoeba). If there is, it will explode, otherwise the fly will turn or move. after the fly moves, a check for the explosion is not done again, the check is done just once at the beginning of the fly scan procedure.

so when the fly is at the intersection, first it checks for amoeba or Κ and because there aren't any, it moves down. now the fly is next to a piece of amoeba but the explosion check was already done and the fly survives on this frame. then the scanning continues and amoebas get scanned. all amoebas are now enclosed so at the end of scan, enclosed-flag is set which will turn amoebas into Α during the next frame. each piece of amoeba is turned into Α when the amoeba is scanned next time. on the next frame, all amoebas are scanned before the fly so the piece of amoeba which is next to Κ is turned into Α before fly gets scanned. fly then checks for amoeba and Κ but there aren't any anymore, the amoeba just got converted into Α and the fly survives.

if the cave would be mirrored so that the fly would start at the left and the amoebas would on the right, the fly wouldn't survive but always explode. why's that?

the fly will eventually again move down next to the amoeba. the explosion check is done before the movement so the fly will survive. amoebas are again all enclosed so enclosed-flag is set after the scan.

but then on the next frame, now the fly is scanned before the amoebas because the fly is on left of them. now the fly checks for amoebas and finds one and explodes before the piece of amoeba next to it gets a chance to convert into Α. one piece of amoeba gets exploded and the rest will turn into Α when they are scanned.

i hope this explanation was comprehensive and clear enough :)

25-11-19 11:34heywood

can anyone please explain how the firefly survives this scenario (assuming the amoeba doesn't grow a square first)?

25-11-22 17:46dustin

nesdori: ha, cool! :d i also had ideas with the Η spinning like this, but then i saw the solution in my demo and somehow forgot to check the spinning idea properly :d

25-11-22 17:18nesdori

dustin, yes, my 6 sec solution is bit tricky but i also did another 8 sec run which is more orthodox and presumably is close to what darkstoorm and Arno did :)

i'll get back to 119Α maze cave later today..

25-11-22 16:25dustin

my solution free! :d

my preparation looks a bit lengthy, but i haven'
t found a more direct way to crush the Η at the right place. it seems to me that nesdori has, though, so i'm curious! :d

the main cso theme is the way Κ catches the first two ΑΑ before they get "flushed". the trick is to grab the first Α in the same frame when its "birth" is finished (for that, Κ needs to be at the Α's right side). then the second Α is taken when it was just about to fall, but Κ is on top of the Α so he's scanned first.

25-11-20 19:37Arno

nice one again! ;-D

b.t.w., i'm also curious to see the top solutions for dustin's bd25 cave p l5. is it already time to reveal them? as far as i'm aware, there's no 120 diamonds solution found by anyone yet, but there are alternative solutions for 119 (some with a "bonus frame"). one 199 run is shared by dustin, but i'm curious for the others found by nesdori! :-)

25-11-19 19:02dustin

six seconds... interesting ;)

25-11-16 18:47DarkStoorM

Really nice! :D

25-11-16 18:43dustin

i'm glad to read that :)

25-11-16 18:34heywood

absolutely, part of the reason I love the series.

25-11-16 18:18dustin

guess that's a natural first reaction for many cso caves ;)

25-11-16 18:06heywood

whaaaaaaat...

25-11-16 18:00dustin

in the cso puzzle for november, Κ can easily create all the ΑΑΑΑΑΑΑΑΑ he needs! so everything should be quite simple... or what?!

remark: originally, i planned to make a version of the previous cso cave, but meanwhile i discovered an unintended solution (see my new comment and demo there). the version has similar issues. i'm still trying to figure out how to fix this elegantly, so the version will probably pop up sometime later!

this kind of caves with an automatic mechanism seems to be one of the trademarks of the pb series (at least from what i've seen until now, which is just 1/17 of the whole series!) :d anyway, i think these caves are always fun and worth playing :d

and that's it for dbd25! 26 will most likely be another "expert remix" like dbd15, with caves from the whole series where there are more ΑΑΑ possible than even the level 5 requirement was!

from the actual dbd25, caves n and p are quite likely to pup up there again :d

nice run Arno! :d

also, thanks for your interest in the little research! it's really a nice mathematical question if either a 120Α path exists or its existance can be disproven by relatively simple means :d

25-11-20 19:33Arno

I've also tried for a while, but could not find a path for 120 diamonds.

I'm curious to see the alternative 119 runs!

i did myself a run of dustin's path for 119, including grapping 119 diamonds, however, this cave speed made it tough, so i did it in the l1 version of this cave, see:
https://boulderdash.krissz.hu/cave/AatdxNZ1T0c3/dustin-s-bd25-cave-p-l1/demo/153828/

25-11-09 21:07dustin

the math (see my previous comment) works for my runs:

| in the 748 run, the path has two loops:
Α a 3x2 loop at the top-middle which can easily be fixed with an extra Γ
Α a 2x2 loop in the top-right corner, which can be fixed by mirroring the whole path. this results in my 758 run.

Β how many ΑΑΑ are possible each time?
Α the path in the 748 run is only good for 116 1/2 Α (116 + one bonus frame)
Α by fixing only the 3x2 loop with the extra Γ, this can be improved to 118 1/2Α
Α and finally, by mirroring (758 run), there are 119Α possible! (although the run doesn't show it, but i tested at lower speed).

this confirms (though not proves) my theory that for every looped path, a better non-looped path can be found!

also, i calculated the total value of the loop-less path in my 758 run, and the result was 243, two away from the 245 needed for a perfect 120Α run. so now i'm almost certain that i did the meth right in the previous comment (for non-looped paths).

i wonder if one of nesdori's 119Α solutions is identical to my 758 run :d i guess it is, because that path isn't too complicated ;)

25-11-09 20:37dustin

darkstoorm, nesdori: i refrained from answering until now because i consider myself one of the most programming-noob physicians in the world, and i already stumbled over the term "genetic algorithm", although now that i read a bit about it it sounds very cool :d

here are my thoughts:

| about darkstoorm's counting: i think the Ζ has to spend 245 frames inside the 11x11 box (for a 120Α run to work):
- 8 frames until Κ is in front of the first Α (in the situation shown in darkstoorm's comment, the Ζ is already 2 frames in, now Κ must wait one more frame and then move 5 frames);
- 120 frames to take the ΑΑΑ, snapping the last one;
- and 119 frames back, from where he can go upwards to the Β to crush the Ζ.
- at that point, the Ζ is ideally 2 left from Κ, which means it's already two frames out of the box again.
so that makes 8+120+119-2 = 245 frames inside the box.

| thoughts on how to evaluate possible path constructions:

for the following, a "loop" is a space arrangement forming a closed circle, so that a Ζ (or Η) could be placed somewhere on the loop and, with some initial direction, stay inside the loop forever. (just the intuitive definition for a boulder dasher, i guess!)

i assume (by feel, for now) that paths without any loops are better than paths with loops, so i consider only paths containing no loops at all.

besides, a "path" is an arrangement of empty space in the 11x11 box where every space is connected to every other. (otherwise it's clearly not the optimum.)

on a loop-less path, it should be possible to easily value each empty space with a number that says how many frames the Ζ will be there in total:
Α value 4 if the space is connected to four other spaces in each direction (the Ζ will return four times for one frame each);
Α value 3 if the space is connected to exactly three other spaces (similar to above);
Α value 3 if the space has exactly two spaces around it, forming a corner (the Ζ will return two times, halting once)
Α value 2 if the space has two spaces around, forming a straight line;
Α value 3 if the space has exactly one space around it (the Ζ halts for two frames to make a 180 turn).

so the sum of the values of all spaces in a loop-less path must be at least 245.

plus some side conditions, like:
Α the top-left corner is always space
Α Κ must have enough room at the top-right to avoid the Ζ.
Α the top-right corner must also be space, plus you have to take into account that it has another space to its right side (which is outside the box but does count for the value of the top-right space inside the box).

i feel that with these abstract rules, it's not too far-fetched to assume that it might be possible for humans to prove or disprove the existance of a value 245 path, actually... :d

25-11-07 02:21nesdori

darkstoorm, interesting thoughts! when it's time to reveal the solutions, i'll show two different 119Α solutions with emphasis on different things which might give you even more ideas :)

25-11-06 01:33DarkStoorM

dustin, nesdori: I'm gonna take a wild guess, maybe a genetic algorithm would do the trick? Never tried it, though :D

Not sure I want to attempt this, the only thing I tried for now was just printing the Ζ path length from a cave setup, placing randomly dirt/space and checking which one is the longest (only manually, though).

I didn't have much time to test this, but I assume the Ζ has to be scanned at least:
- 239 times (you snap the last Α)
- + whatever it takes ^ to get to the first Α, which I think is 7 if Ζ is to the left of the Ε corner
- + I think 2 to allow ^ to go up without getting touched (Ζ has to be 2 cells to the left when reaching the entrance)
- +1 more move to reach the entrance above ^ (first diamond is one cell to the right of the entrance above)

I might have missed something, because this gives 249 scans and depending on where we start measuring, my guess is that Ζ has to be scanned around 254 times for a 120Α run, assuming the following starting setting:

^.....Α Gonna miss one frame here no matter what;
.ΖΕΕΕΕΕ Ζ has to be scanned

No clue yet, but I'd love to see a full run!

25-11-05 13:28dustin

heeey, nesdori, good to see you again after several months! :)

in fact, i was actually kinda hoping that you'd comment on this topic, i think such "path maximizing" tasks could be an interesting topic for further caves :d

darkstoorm, interesting idea to do another brute force search with computers after the whole dff search! maybe it would make sense to start with smaller 'boards' than 11x11, such that the brute force still ends before star trek begins :d then we could see if we discover patterns which can also be used for bigger boards!

25-11-04 23:10nesdori

darkstoorm, interesting idea but i think it would be a tough challenge for computers and ai to beat human mind here in sensible time. it's not only about the maze itself but also about Κ passing the fly. but maybe doable if the input already is 119Α solution and the task is just to improve that.. :) what i found difficult is that sometimes i ended up with closed sections and then deciding how to connect each section effectively was quite challenging at times.

25-11-04 22:44DarkStoorM

This makes me think that maybe some "maze generator" for firefly would be in place that would search for the longest possible path in this setting, maybe it could find 120+! :D

25-11-04 21:48nesdori

of course 119Α and not 199Α :D

25-11-04 21:37nesdori

i got 199Α with four slightly different tries. it takes 2 frames improvement to get additional Α and all those were exactly the same "low" 199Α with 2 frames away from 200Α and not "high" 199Α with just one frame away.

it seems that there's fine balance between different means to maximize the time the fly spends on the left section. those means include maximizing the path length, maximize the number of locations where the fly visits 3-4 times (intersections) and maximize the turns the fly has to make (and avoid straight pathways). if you weight one those, the two other suffer. and no matter how i tried to weight them the best result is always 199Α although the solutions look a bit different.

because there have been so many 199Α:s, most probably i have missed something sometimes and at least high 199Α with one frame improvement should be possible. Maybe even 2 frames although currently it feels quite impossible.

update to dustin's difficulty ratings:

199Α, 9.5/10
200Α, still not sure if possible :)

25-11-04 03:18heywood

"only" :D

25-11-03 23:57DarkStoorM

I can only get 116 :D

25-11-03 10:53dustin

and here comes the big final! with 111Α required, Κ has to dig a very efficient, time-consuming path for the Ζ.

i'm still wondering what the best possible path would be, such that the Ζ takes as much time as possible. when i tested this cave before the release, i tried different variants, and my best one got me 117Α.

so i released the game with the still open question if it's possible to get all the 120Α available! (and if it is possible, then how many more ΑΑΑ would be possible if the ΑΑΑ row continued?)

well, i guess it's already tricky enough to get the required 111Α! the best (visible) run on level 1 got "only" 106Α, so that still needs improvement!)

difficulty: 7/10 (117Α: 9/10, 120Α: not sure if possible)

nesdori: the expert remix caves will have higher requirements, ideally with no other changes. it's similar to dustin's bd15 (the first expert remix i already made, with caves from dbd 1-14). however, i uploaded only a handful caves from that set here at this site, the reason being that the solutions were already shown in demos from the original caves! :d

it will most likely be a similar thing with the next expert remix. it will be a gdash game, but i don't see much sense in uploading the caves here at this site :d

so yes, i think it makes totally sense if you put all your efforts in this cave already! unless you think it would make sense to have a version where getting bonus ΑΑΑ is valued more by the scoring, in relation to the remaining time. with the scorings here, the ΘΘΘ might take too long to grow into the extra space, so it might not even be worth it for highscore?!

of course, you can also make a modified version yourself and upload it, feel free to do so if you like :)

25-11-06 23:53nesdori

dustin, how would the expert remix caves differ from the originals? different requirements and scoring maybe? i would say that 130Α is nowhere near the limit yet but i'm wondering if it's preferable to put the best effort already here or wait for the expert remix version :)

124Α :d i wonder how many you have, darkstoorm :d

25-10-30 21:38dustin

i think it's quite tricky to make the ΘΘΘ cage as big as possible so that the ΒΒΒ don't collapse!

the question is how many ΑΑΑ are possible - when i released the game, my best had been 115Α if i recall correctly, but i just replayed it and got 120Α :d

111Α are already quite hard, i think.

let's continue the madness of level 5! the closer the finish line, the harder the caves - this one here is surely among the top 3 which trouble me most every time i play it! a big reason for that is the speed!

quite untypical for level 5, i gave one extra Α, just because i found this cave insane enough as it is :d

ah, that's it :-D

25-10-27 01:30dustin

this is just the normal level 1 seed (100) but with higher ΑΑΑ density! just for fun, not a result of my little research :d

but actually, i checked all possible seeds from 0-255 by now. my goal was to find a seed with the following two conditions:

| no more than 99 ΑΑΑ possible. (the reason is that my level infinity should be theoretically possible to create with the bd1 engine!) this condition is fulfilled by about ten percent of all seeds.

| among these seeds, i'm still testing to find the one where it's most challenging and interesting to get all the possible ΑΑΑ (ideally without pushing luck required.)

so actually, i didn't really look for the seed with the most ΑΑΑ possible - i sorted out the ones where i got 100+ ΑΑΑ immediately without trying to get as many ΑΑΑ as possible.

25-10-26 17:55Arno

Is this rng seed value the one with most diamond possible? I guess so, Given that rockford can dive quite deep in the Middle area, and also gain quite an amount at the left side...

25-10-25 17:26dustin

i tested so many cave i versions for the "bd1 infinity" series that i had to make at least one new classic remake cave out of it :d

this might be a welcome break between some super difficult dustin's bd25 level 5 caves :d

on the other hand, once Κ has figured out the way to do it, the implementation becomes relatively simple. and there's plenty of time - "thinking time" included! :d

25-10-22 10:58dustin

here, the random seed makes all the difference - while on level 1, the ΒΒΒ were nicely placed next to the ΔΔΔ, it's a totally different thing here. the starting room is the key - here, Κ has to figure out not only how to blast the left and the right ΔΔΔ, but he also needs to prepare for the rest of the cave. it's a tricky escape puzzle!

all three alternate rooms are very tricky due to the random seeds:
| this one requires extreme prudence plus a tricky trick;
| room 2: an insane ΖΖΖ gauntlet;
| room 3: another sort of "prudence plus trick" exavation puzzle.

what adds to the difficulty is that Κ cannot freely choose one of the puzzles to solve because the rng (ΘΘΘ) decides every time!

an astute eye will remember the aesthetic of this cave: it's part of the 2024 lonely witch tale. higher levels not only lowered the time, but with adjustments of the rings, it also made the buffer going in and out a lot less forgiving.

25-11-14 22:45dustin

i just discovered an unintended solution (see my 820 run)! could easily be fixed with a heavy Ο, but i'm gonna leave it because the intended solution is now known anyway :d

25-10-30 22:04dustin

excellent explanation, darkstoorm! :d

and heywood, it's amazing to see you so constantly interested in the cso series!

teaser: the november cave will be a version of this :d

25-10-29 11:36heywood

thanks a lot! still took me a load of attempts to get the timing right. :)

25-10-27 23:04DarkStoorM

Demo free, a quick explanation:

Because Η prefers moving to its right first, in a 3x2 box like this:

^ΓΜ / .^Μ / .ΜΜ
..Η / .Η. / Η..

if ^ moves to the right on the next frame, he can safely touch Η and move up. Normally, the Η would stick to ^ when moving upwards (also applies to moving left with Η), because ^ gets scanned first and not explode. Here, the growing wall is to the right of ^ and it gets scanned right after ^ moves up, resulting in blocking the Η:s path, making it move left instead of up, so it ends up moving below the sliding | that crushes it.

25-10-25 12:33heywood

has it been long enough to request to see some solutions for this one? i got nowhere with it! thanks.

25-10-15 21:50dustin

the cso cave for october features a Η which can't be crushed - except it can :d

enough bonus ΑΑΑ collected in the previous cave - now, it's "grab 'em all!" again :d and the random seed makes this particularly challenging - it's surely harder to get all ΑΑΑ here than it was on level 1!

the first cave on level 5 where Κ can grab bonus ΑΑΑ! yaay :d
required are 350 out of 405 ΑΑΑ (unless there's a crazy way to convert the ΘΘΘ into ΑΑΑ, but i r-e-a-l-l-y don't think so ;d) i think this is a fair compromise; requiring all 405Α would be crazy to an extent that exceeds even the high skill (and luck) demands of this level 5!

this time, the random seed makes all the difference - firstly, Κ has to remove the ΒΒΒ so he can get to the bottom, and then both the left and right tunnels have their pitfalls! it's easy to get stuck here!

quick speed in a narrow maze = increased danger to get caught! plus, Κ needs a good route where he gets all the ΑΑΑ. the timer is not super strict, though, so if the last missing Α happens to be at the other side of the vave, there's still a chance to get it in time (but then he needs to be quick!)

i guess it's time for the big challenge! :d

let's go for the hardest versions of the 'dustin's bd 25' caves - Κ will not find any bonus ΑΑΑ until cave h, and also very few ones afterwards! furthermore, the speed is quicker, the time shorter and some caves have more 'random' ΒΒΒ in the way.

i'm trying to give a difficulty rating for each cave. i'm also going to upload the intermissions for completeness, although these haven't changed much compared to level 1 (mainly they're quicker).

ready? let's go! :d

this is one of the more difficult caves of the series - the explosions might be a bit tricky and the time limit is tough (i added some time for pal timing compensation).

so, to bring the Ζ through, it's all about giving it an odd number of right turns in each ΑΑΑ-ΓΓΓ-ΔΔΔ section. that's the only possibility to change parity, as the parity of the path length itself cannot be changed, no matter how Κ digs the path. and as left turns don't cause the Ζ to halt and 180 degree turns make it halt for 2 frames, these can't change parity either. only right turns can :d

25-10-04 11:20Arno

My run free! :-D

25-10-03 15:37dustin

yes, indeed, i think in this cave bringing Κ to the exit (that is, the area where i strongly assume the exit is) is harder than bringing the Ζ there :d the slow speed does help, but i still find it tricky under time and Ζ-from-behind pressure :d

ah yes, of course, these modulo 8+ implementations are fairly simple :d

25-10-03 09:35Arno

that's what I suspected indeed, since i did not see a solution from you yet... ;-)

my idea for modulo 8 is to let the ff run around a single t-wall, and for modulo 16 use a 3x3 t-wall box instead.

25-10-02 19:25dustin

sounds great! i'm especially curious how you implement the modulo 8 and 16 ideas :d

maybe i'll find these version even a bit easier. my main problem in this cave is not so much to bring the Ζ to its destination, but Κ himself :d

25-10-02 11:06Arno

indeed, that's an idea i have for a next cave. with increasing difficulty for the ff path from modulo 2 to 4, 8 and 16. :-)

25-10-01 22:09dustin

i wonder if you also considered a version with only one Ζ instead of a ΖΖ vortex on each spot. in this case, it would be easier for Κ himself to pass the spots, but on the other hand, it would be harder to navigate the Ζ to the end (it would be modulo 4 instead of modulo 2 on each spot) :d

25-09-28 14:39Arno

That's indeed the main idea of the cave, thanx for playing guys! :-D

25-09-28 00:41DarkStoorM

That was fun to figure out, nice cave! :D

25-09-28 00:01dustin

very appealing design and i see where the cave is going, the Ζ must always be given the right parity to pass the vortices! that's a very cool idea once again, and it proves once more how much potential boulder dash still has! :d

and, as has become traditional for most dff caves, this is not just a chill-and-enjoy cave, but also a real challenge:
| on the way up, Κ can't lose a single frame.
| afterwards, he needs all ΑΑΑ in short time! (although not super-short)

25-09-23 23:50dustin

a new (unique) dff!
-------------------

this cave shows a new dancing fly formation! it was discovered and first published by darkstoorm in his cave "funny flies collection" (3rd formation from left).

it resebles much the smaller dff "lifted Ζ-vortex" but with four extra ΗΗΗΗ who sort of compete with the fifth Η about who dances with the ΖΖ couple.

hence i think a good name for the dff is "mega lifted Ζ-vortex".

it's very close to being a free-rider formation, but a closer analysis of the inner mechanics shows that this is ineed a unique dff! (not just a normal lifted Ζ-vortex carrying four ΗΗΗΗ as free riders.)

said analysis will show up on Arno's forum thread sometime soon!

and btw, the episode on the previous dff cave, "seven to heaven", is out since a few weeks, so if you haven't read it yet and you're interested, there's some scientific material for you to read :d (Arno's forum - tools, fanstuff - dancing fly formations explained)

this time it isn't going to be easy as the \ quota is a little more strict courtesy of the initial sacrifice. But it's doable. staying on theme, this is another chemical brothers track, but from "Exit planet dust".

the reason behind the LP title is that the duo was performing small time as "the dust brothers", but due to a conflict with the NA act of the same name and to avoid a potential lawsuit, the duo had changed their name to "the chemical brothers". "exit planet dust" was more or less a response to the name change.

HOWEVER! the chemical brothers remixed as 'dust brothers' only for UK acts, including the prodigy. I would wager it was '94? when they had to change their name.

all solutions free! :d

as Arno mentioned below, the cso effect is the problem instead of the solution this time :d it's the fact that Κ is unable to escape the ΙΙΙ once he contacts it.

this is quite easy to rebuild - all you have to do is:
Β put the ΙΙΙ into the bottom row,
Β set the permeability to zero and
Β set vertical open border.

if the permeability is not zero, then Κ has a random chance to survive if he leaves the row below the ΙΙΙ. this could also be an interesting idea for a kind of luck-based cave maybe :d

i also made a bigger cave around the same theme, see "don't move down!"

25-09-17 22:55dustin

ah nah, i was mistaken. the Β falls sideways in some demos, it just looks like pushing :d

25-09-17 22:51dustin

nice darkstoorm! :d so far all visible demos use a Β push; if Arno's 427 run does so, too, then i guess it makes sense to upload a "level 2" version with heavy ΟΟΟ!

25-09-17 19:35DarkStoorM

Hehe, the push isn't really required, but for a quicker solution it is (at least I think so!)

25-09-17 12:29dustin

yes, indeed! :d

well, it's kind of both the problem a n d the solution. if i'm not mistaken, the Β pushes in the visible solutions would also not be ossible if the ΙΙΙ wasn't in the bottom row.

speaking of which, my intended solution doesn't even use Β pushes. it may be an idea to make a harder version with heavy ΟΟΟ (but i guess the top solutions might already use no-pushing methods, we will see) :d

25-09-17 11:05Arno

so this time, the cso effect is the problem instead of the solution! :-D

and a finish by robert armani..

zip bombs use recursive directories that overwhlem a system when an archival software attempts to unpack them. hopefully ^ doesn't get overwhelmed when attempting to unpack this miniature masterclass.

and the mandated associated autechre trivia: "we r are why / are y are we?" is actually an ep that uses the yamaha ry-30 drum machine alongside different effects. the RY-30 would be part of their staple including elektron synthesizers and FM synthesizers later on (notably, on oversteps/move of ten).

25-09-11 01:04altermaven

though, I will admit, doing it through supaplex was much easier because of the ability to use ports to gate the rooms, whereas with this one, I had to be selective in which rooms get walled off in a one-way pass.

25-09-11 01:03altermaven

I've done a similar thematic in supaplex with a level of the same name, and immediately after with different setups on the appropriately named "are y are we?" which is the flipside to "we r are why"...

which, surprise! are autechre track titles of the same EP (wap72).

25-09-10 19:34dustin

that wasn't easy, but the nice cave design with the small rooms made me play on :d

- mb soft: boulder games 0, cave h -

a new series on fanmade caves! :d

the ten mb soft games are mostly very classic-style caves which i find nice to play but not interesting enough to recreate and upload the whole caveset. however, this cave caught my attraction because i found it quite tricky to avoid all the ΖΖΖ - it took me quite a few attempts to figure out a good path where Κ doesn't cross with them!

that's basically the whole idea behind this series - upload single caves from games/cavesets where i don't wanna upload everything!

have fun :d

BD1 was notorious for slowing down when it came to rendering a lot of boulders and diamonds, because of states being checked on each scan, and that the method of scanning was not exactly robust. BD2 didn't have as much trouble with this - Cave M had a lot of boulders and diamonds, but there were improvements on the scan routine.

25-09-01 20:37dustin

that one might look easy, but it is... well, easy ;) It might still take Κ a few attempts because he can block off his exit.

(slow speed intended - the games were made with bd1 or bd2 engine, i'm not completely sure which one, but they slowed down considerably with big ΒΒΒ masses.)

- ΗΗΗ gridlock -

this int is supposed to show how best to lead ΗΗΗ toward ΒΒΒ (or ΘΘΘ), such that all of them actually go where Κ wants them to go instead of forming dance formations.

it's something i learned by playing lots of classic-style ΗΗΗ+ΘΘΘ fancaves.

it's also possible to solve the cave without preparing anything, but it's a lot more awkward then.

well, that's it for dustin's bd25, level 1! (no outro cave this time because as it is, it's exactly 25 caves :d)

but - the dbd series (almost) never ends on level 1, so beware of level 5 which is going to come soon, and there will be very, very few bonus ΑΑΑ! :d

- maze race -

this one was originally supposed to be one of the boss fights in "the new elements 2", but in the end i thought it made too little use of the non-classical gdash elements, so i made a completely classical version out of it (if you count a voodoo doll as classical, that is) :d

i quite like the design and the "atmosphere" in this cave - at first sight, everything looks completely simple, but then Κ suddenly realizes where the problem is :d

25-08-23 11:36dustin

yes. definitely! :d

but actually, in my childhood, i don't remember exactly if and how much i was interested in toy blocks/ legos. what i do remember is that i had a fascination for the concept of letters and writing from an early age on. in fact, one of the reasons why i liked bd as a kid was that the caves were numerated alphabetically! (and i was definitely disappointed to find that it ended with p. luckily, a few decades later, alchemyst dangerdash 3 finally fixed this huge flaw!) :d

I too remember legos when I was a wee lad. The simplest form of material for creativity.
