most of the caves in dangerdash 5 are more or less reprises from caves distributed here, but there were some exceptions, which I'll be pushing in small increments. I also made 'level 6' versions of a few notables.

25-08-21 20:56Rob Gilbert

Thanks for the opinion! I guess I'll pick it up a bit later, especially if it goes on sale eventually.

25-08-21 19:25altermaven

as an added note: I did have to make some.. concessions when helping port dangerdash vol.01 to modern. helping them debug their bdcff interpreter, resorting to map for a few caves to make requisite changes, make concessions.. overall, I'm rather pleased with how things turned out.

the biggest challenge is trying to port brain delicacy. there was a lot of involved nuances that just didn't really fully translate.

25-08-21 19:22altermaven

it's not 100% and it seems to more or less be problematic of the core it's built on (unity..) but the modern has been rather fluid. AFAIK they're still trying to iron out the specifics but they won't be able to exactly replicate all of the nuances of classic bd.

25-08-21 16:55Rob Gilbert

So, what do you think about the 40th anniversary game? i haven't purchased it yet, but judging what i see on the videos and by the demo, i sure like the modern part of the game (which is sort of its own deal), it looks nice and plays nice too, but the implementation of the classic games seems slightly off. I'm sure most people won't notice, but some of the minor details are definitely... different. Like, timings, explosions (possibly), it also looks like you can't really snap-activate the exit. i think the fan games are still king when it comes to implementing classic bd.

Happy Boulder Dash 40th Anniversary release day!

25-07-29 14:14altermaven

Dangerdash vol.5 is now on the gamebase! thanks Arno!

25-07-05 19:13dustin

cool! i like surprises :d

25-07-01 02:53altermaven

coming out of the blue, dangerdash vol.05 has been released. :D

25-06-27 12:05darkwood

krissz, Thanks you

25-06-27 10:38krissz

darkwood: Thanks the bug report, it is fixed!

25-06-26 13:19darkwood

Hi! When I want to search in database caves by creator on drop-down list I can see only names till 's' letter, currently last on shredder.
krissz, It's a bug? or there is another possibility to do this search?

25-06-11 14:56altermaven

oh snap, the word is out haha
I went with dangerdash 1 because it didn't involve any border trickery and it had that very "plays like classic boulder dash" feel. though, I did have to make some concessions when having it conveyed in modern terms. so expect a few differences between this and the original.

25-06-11 14:28dustin

that sounds good! on the official site, i even found july 10 as release date?!

unfortunately, it seems i was too late offering myself for game testing and/or cave contributions, but i'm glad to see caves from Arno and altermaven in the demo version, so our community is obviously well represented :)

25-06-10 19:27altermaven

boulder dash 40th anniversary is launching 24 july on various systems. source: official

25-04-30 22:17dustin

well i thought about it, but i don't want to commit myself to visiting this year's gamescom at this point. if there will be a bd event there, it would definitely be a good reason to visit it, but it's still some 400km away from me, so i'm not sure yet.

25-04-28 02:29dustin

darkstoorm: yup, the gamescom is a yearly event in cologne, germany. this year, it will be from aug 20-24.

i've never been there before, actually. i don't consider myself an especially great player either, but it might be possible for me to go there this year. independant of the competition, it'd of course be great to meet someone from our community there! just a rough idea so far :d

25-04-27 17:48DarkStoorM

krissz, Rob Gilbert: That's a local event in Germany (I think), right? I won't be able to attend, sadly :(

Still Would be fun to watch though if anyone records it!

25-04-27 17:28Rob Gilbert

Personally I'm definitely not good enough to compete at that level, but If either darkstoorm or nesdori joined, I'm pretty sure we'd have a winner FROM THIS community :D

25-04-27 09:03krissz

I got this question:

"We are considering to host a Boulder Dash World Champioship at this years gamescom exhibition. Do you think within your Boulder Dash fan group we could find great Boulder Dash players who would be interested to join the competition?"

So, anybody?

25-04-15 10:15altermaven

"do not deviate too much from the original plan." that's all I am saying..

25-04-12 13:58dustin

krissz, i know i'm quite late with this, but i would participate in the bd 40th beta testing too (if my old laptop can take it - worth a shot, i guess)! :)

25-04-11 13:57darkwood

Hi!

krissz, if this is still relevant, I would like to participate in the beta testing of the BD 40th edition

P.S. it seems that the problem with ISP routing and my online access to this site was resolved on April 9th, so far it works without VPN. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

25-04-03 06:47kozelX

i am very interrested too, thank you

25-03-25 21:14krissz

kaosikon, I have lost your email address. Please write me something to info@krissz.hu and I will send the details about bd 40th.

25-03-24 20:21kaosikon

Boulder Dash 40th anniversary version? Definitely interested! Looking forward to hearing more about it! :-)

25-02-02 14:14heywood

i can absolutely verify that i would be interested. :)

25-01-31 18:33altermaven

I cannot verify nor deny my position here.

25-01-31 16:05krissz

Would any of you be interested participating in the beta testing of the Boulder Dash 40th Anniversary version? Or even making caves into it?

24-12-30 16:09altermaven

will there be a finale for 2024? I just did 22 of them, if you haven't known ;)

see you on the flipside!

24-11-13 18:19dustin

a new episode about dancing fly formations is on Arno's site! it's about the following caves:

"a nest of 7 fflies" by nesdori
"dff 33 a nest of 2+5n ΖΖΖΖ" by me

have fun :d

24-11-01 16:47altermaven

wonder how "crowded" the doubled version of cave K will be ;)

24-10-18 14:05altermaven

oh snap, we got contacted by someone at BBG in the forums. And he seems very impressed by our community. I hope he does us justice with boulder dash 40th :)

24-10-06 22:36dustin

for dff fans
------------

episode 20 of the dancing fly formation thread at Arno's forum is out! it includes a detailed explanation of the following caves:
| my caves "dff 30-32"
| nesdori's older cave "new 6-fly dff:s"
it's quite a long article - enjoy it :d

24-10-05 12:50altermaven

more b-sides monday.

24-09-26 09:46altermaven

oops, I forgot to add the titlecard to dangerdash 4. that's been fixed.

24-09-26 01:13altermaven

Dangerdash vol.4 was released. bdgb push soon. it's late. pillow soft.

24-09-10 23:14altermaven

Removed 09C while I figure out something else.

24-08-29 20:12altermaven

We never did make a name for the "T" structure that uses the amoeba and slime to restrict amoeba change, did we?

let me call it the "t-strike". The reason I use 'strike' is because a strike is often used as a penalty term, and activating this mechanism 'strikes you' for doing so, by making the firefly smack the voodoo.

24-08-23 15:46altermaven

Taken down the "t" in the method series since I'm just going to retool the entire cave, which would warrant for more than just an edit

this means I will be pulling another name out of the bag

24-08-02 17:04dustin

for all fans of dancing fly formations:
---------------------------------------

after 4 years of pausing, a new episode in Arno's forum thread "dancing fly formations explained" is published! enjoy it :)

24-07-09 01:56altermaven

if any of the caves from the "factor" series is to be purposed in videos, just use the subtitle or list it as "factor: (name)".

24-05-26 17:46altermaven

repurposing the current stripes dx because I didn't like how things progressed in diagonals.

24-05-06 02:20altermaven

in re: prismatic hue shift series.

The minimum shift in hue to trigger representation of primary and secondary colour is 6 (by incrementing hue value by 60). However, there are certain nuances when it comes to drawing more specific colors out of the spectrum in terms of shifting.

the maximum amount of shifting in canonical steps is 24, which is double the resolution of what I went with (a 12-slice, or a 30-step). I say canonical step, because it includes both the teritary (30-step) and secondary (60-step) colors in position.

However, it is theoretically possible to commit a 18-slice (20-step) when designing hue shifts, but it isn't canonical because we bypass the odd-numbered tens going between secondaries. IT does make for a more subtle flow without having to commit to granularity, though.

Something I should test when I get back into designing caves. I'm on hiatus right now.

(this blurb may or may not be influenced by one of dustin's posts about an upcoming caveset ;) )

24-03-28 00:10altermaven

you don't really need 8khz for precision in bd, 1khz rate is more than enough. the only time you would want more precision is for the people who play games at 144hz+, and I'm very certain this isn't the demographic.

plus, those keyboards tend to be rather expensive for the package.

24-03-27 21:47DarkStoorM

darkwood: to be honest, 1khz is more than enough unless you plan on playing very fast caves. Whenever I play BD, I just take my 1khz keyboard, because on regular 125hz you will lose inputs, which is annoying :D
I also have a bluetooth 60hz keyboard (1khz wired), and it's even worse :D

To give you a reference, on fastest BD cave speed, you don't lose any inputs on 1khz, I also tried on my local clone with 14 speed, works perfect. 8khz is "an overkill" in my opinion - and probably a waste of CPu resources on slower machines

24-03-27 20:59darkwood

Good day, Community.
Is anyone considering the Wooting 80HE keyboard which the manufacturer claims supports True 8kHz Polling Rate not only on the USB-C port, but also on the keyboard PCB for better experience to playing BD?
https://wooting.io/wooting-80he

does anyone have any thoughts on this?

24-03-25 23:22altermaven

that sounds like no1's 16-game bd where you could pick "surprise me!" and it would pull caves from all from that disk. I am intrigued as to how that works.
(bd1-3 official w/ no one's patches, bd4 watson, bd5-9 pedro, boulderhead 1, and no1's 1-5 on that disk)

24-03-25 22:21dustin

hi, i have a question about how "delight bd" by no1 works.

as i understand it, there are 45 seperate "delight" games from no1, and then he published "delight boulderdash 1-2" which generates different caves every time it's played.

so if, for example, i start to play "delight bd 1", my first cave could be cave a from "delight 4", then next could be cave b from "delight 13", then cave c from "delight 7" and so on? do i understand that right?

it works similarly with "prima bd", i think?
thanks for help! :)

24-01-04 22:57dustin

happy new year everyone :)

24-01-01 19:31Piter

happy new year! hope it will be better than 2023 and worse than 2025 ;-)

24-01-01 15:40darkwood

merry christmas and happy new year!

23-12-31 23:57DarkStoorM

Happy new Year from Poland! Another banger year with the BD community :D

23-12-31 12:59altermaven

Correct. option P just creates a randomizer of caves, and that randomization of caves remains as long as the game persists. but in the no1 16 format, each game has five levels (as opposed to the standard 1-level that no1's caves and boulderhead had).

23-12-30 19:54dustin

ah, that's how it works, thx altermaven! so then it's still true that "game p" has no own caves.

23-12-30 08:55altermaven

No, option "P" will shuffle caves from all the games listed. this means cave A could be BD3/a, cave B could be No1-3/B, Cave C could be BD9/c, etc...

23-12-29 19:55dustin

happy holidays, and hopefully you all had happy xmas! :d

i have a question about no one's 16 bd game:
am i right that if game p is chosen in the title screen, then a random game from a-o is chosen? so there are actually "only" 15 bd games in this compilation?

23-12-24 21:09DarkStoorM

Happy HOlidays! ;D Another banger year for ^

23-12-24 10:47altermaven

happy holidays from the alchemyst. be safe out there.

23-12-24 08:15enrico

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all of you and your loved ones.

...and Rockford forever!

23-12-01 13:00altermaven

don't know what I would do for season festivia III, but all I know is that it probably won't be another tree.

23-11-03 09:36altermaven

dangerdash 3 had a minor update, I've adjusted "nambulite" to have the same less-intense red as the b-side of the cave on this site. that way, it won't be as much of a sore now, even though the levels don't last long.

23-11-03 01:33dustin

Kozelx: yes, why not? that'll surely be interesting! :)

23-10-30 16:56kozelX

i should konvert more caves from rox, there are plenty of good ideas

23-10-30 09:53Arno

my pleasure; i like the cave a lot! :-D

23-10-29 19:49kozelX

great Arno !

23-10-29 16:28altermaven

Arno is!

23-10-29 14:16kozelX

who is maintaining @BoulderDashFan youtube ?

my level is there, thank you :)

23-10-26 12:26altermaven

Taking a break before I post the M-z flips, about two weeks, due to other things going on. so dustin can keep with the no one's boulder updates :)

23-10-23 16:45altermaven

the following minerals from add3 will not be repeated since they were represented during this site's version of minerals a-z, and that they were duplicates (and b-sided respectively):

| indicolite
| quartz
| ussingite
| xonotlite
| yugawaralite

23-10-22 11:07altermaven

I have a better idea for the b-side to "halite", I just need to build it. but I wanted everyone to see the unique gimmick to the "h" in add3 :)

23-10-20 22:56altermaven

that was one of several games I had access to growing up so I figured I'd give pointers about that game :)

23-10-20 21:58dustin

altermaven: YOU'RE WELCOME :) ALSO, THANKS FOR YOUR HINTS ON "impossible mission". :)

23-10-18 19:15darkwood

nesdori, thanks! have a LOGITECH KB WITH CHERRY MX BROWN SWITCHES, SO IT WILL BE INTERESTING TO COMPARE THEM WITH THE ROMER-G SWITCHES...

23-10-18 17:30nesdori

darkwood, logitech g810 (usually :)

23-10-18 15:42darkwood

nesdori, please tell which keyboard you use to play bd?

23-10-13 13:22altermaven

thanks dustin for nagging revvv about the inclusion of dangerdash 3, i was just about to do that, but i see i don't have to :)

for the people here: i will eventually get add3 pushed here but with the exception of the caves that were effectively cloned due to the minerals a-z. but these versions are going to be slightly different, as a nod to the 'b-sides' edition of the very first alchemyst dig I pushed here.

talk about a throwback :D

23-09-27 19:49krissz

nesdori:

I had to implement the cycle perfect emulation for all of the chips (CPU, VIC, CIA chips) because this is the only approach what could work. The problems what you have noticed belongs to the sprite handling. I will rewrite this part completely. Every day I learn a lot (that's why I started to develop this emulator) so time to time I have to rewrite something. As I wrote in the info box this is a developer version yet.

I have to do lots of simplifications because of the enjoyable running speed but I do this by insane optimizations instead breaking the correct emulation.

Most of the problems are far-far deeper than the cycle perfect emulation. I have to handle the special cases of a special case of a special case... Mostly hardware bugs or unclear and undocumented timing issues... But this is an amazing project I think.

Yes, the last few months was completely crazy for me. Currently I know ten times more about the C64 than 4 months ago and I feel like who absolutely doesn't know anything. :)

The plan is the following:
- fixing these annoying and inscrutable issues
- implement the 1541 drive emulation and D64 handling
- experimenting with WebRTC for online multiplayer gaming

All:
If you have an idea how can I take the advantages of the online platform for this emulator, I welcome your feature requests!

23-09-27 11:24nesdori

krissz, great job with the emulator! :) especially if you started from scratch are made all of this in two months :O

you probably are already aware of this but there seems to be vic-ii emulation related quirks in some games. for example, sprites in "exploding fist" shouldn't have empty raster lines between them. i wonder if this has something to do with the "badline" raster line emulation. do you emulate vic-ii workings cycle by cycle during the bad lines and emulate the state of eac-, address- and irq buses cycle wise or do you use some kind of simplication to deal with the bad lines?

23-09-26 01:24altermaven

dustin: the goal of impossible mission is to search furniture for 36 fragments of punch cards, which then must be assembled, 4 at a time, to create the "password" that opens up the control room so you can stop the professor from setting off a nuclear bomb.

game starts at 12:00, ends at 6:00.
Connecting for hints regarding the punch cards spends 2 minutes.
Dying spends 10.

you can also get "passcodes" from searching:
- snooze: disables all robots in the current room for about 2 minutes.
- lift init: resets all lifts in the current room to their starts.

One room has a "soundboard" puzzle that you must repeat in increasing pitch. This is optional, and serves to give you bonus snoozes and inits.

good luck, agent.

23-09-25 22:11dustin

krissz: very nice :d i randomly tried the game "impossible mission" but i had no idea where to go haha :d

23-09-25 14:19krissz

Piter: you can turn off the sticky key "feature" easily.

The ctrl key would be worst because some of the browser shortcuts are hardcoded and I can not handle. For example in two player mode the second player uses the WASD keys then the ctrl+W together close the browser tab...

The SPACE key is also reserved by lot of C64 games... The ALT key is handled by the Os...

Considering all of these, I decided that the SHIFT keys are the safest.

But anyway, you can configure.

23-09-25 14:11altermaven

if you are having trouble with sticky keys, the option to turn that off is in windows accessability.

23-09-25 13:51Piter

of course it turns on sticky keys, not off.

23-09-25 13:50Piter

krissz, very nice :-) what i would change is default right shift as fire. If you play on windows it turns off sticky keys when you press it consecutive few times. better would be right control :-) besides that i am truly impressed! great work!

23-09-25 12:04enrico

thanks krissz!

23-09-24 08:55krissz

Few months ago I start to develop a new Commodore 64 emulator for web browsers from scratch in native javaScript. It is under development but I have published so everybody can use it:

https://ty64.krissz.hu/

Also, I have created more than 200 game pages (based on this emulator, except my few old javascript remakes). The list of the available games is growing day by day, here is the index:

https://c64.krissz.hu/online-playable-games/

Just click and play. Have fun!

23-09-23 17:10dustin

thanks for the link Kozelx! :d

23-09-22 18:39kozelX

dustin: no problem

rox is very nice, but little different rules

there is my web with all caves maps and downloads
https://kokes.krcma.cz/rox/

23-09-22 00:33dustin

Kozelx: sorry for spelling your name wrong.

23-09-22 00:32dustin

enrico: that can sometimes happen. i once accidently uploaded a cave with more ΑΑΑ required than available, and my first gdash game had unplayable level-5 caves because i didn't test them properly (greetings to american action) :d (everything fixed meanwhile)

kozalx: i didn't know that game, but it looks very interesting, and freeqare, cool! thanks for the hint, i'm gonna try it out :d

everyone: since kozalx just uploaded more than 10 nice classic caves from Firefox, should i still upload no one 11 this weekend, or do you think it's enough classic caves for this week? any opinions? :d

23-09-21 18:32kozelX

does anybody here try safrosoft Rox game ?

23-09-20 16:01enrico

thanks darkstoorm, every now and then I fall asleep!

23-09-20 15:32DarkStoorM

enrico, I think for now the best way is to just check the "last commented caves", which will be at the top when new comments appear

23-09-20 12:00Piter

enrico no need to apologize :-)

23-09-20 00:10enrico

Tonight I read messages for the cave krissz torure dash 3 flip v. It was a coincidence because I had the wrong line in selecting a cave.

Without that mistake the answer would not have been there for a long time or perhaps never, and sorry when for a mistake in the construction phase the cave becomes unplayable.

Wouldn't there be a possibility to recall the title of the cave for which there is a new message with a flashing flag next to the title?

Thank you as usual for your attention. A warm greeting.

23-09-15 17:56altermaven

Dangerdash 3 will use rgb colours, which is a departure from the normal c64 nature, since I needed more flexibility in designing the colour schemes. You'll understand once the caveset takes form :)

23-09-07 10:11dustin

:)

23-09-03 09:13enrico

Two words to express a sincere thanks to krissz for the commitment with which he carries on this wonderful site. And thanks without distinction to all those who with their creations give us daily moments of serenity and high-level mental exercise. Have a nice day, friends!

23-08-30 12:11dustin

enough bonus ΑΑΑ collected in the previous cave - now, it's "grab 'em all!" again :d and the random seed makes this particularly challenging - it's surely harder to get all ΑΑΑ here than it was on level 1!

the first cave on level 5 where Κ can grab bonus ΑΑΑ! yaay :d
required are 350 out of 405 ΑΑΑ (unless there's a crazy way to convert the ΘΘΘ into ΑΑΑ, but i r-e-a-l-l-y don't think so ;d) i think this is a fair compromise; requiring all 405Α would be crazy to an extent that exceeds even the high skill (and luck) demands of this level 5!

difficulty: 5/10

this time, the random seed makes all the difference - firstly, Κ has to remove the ΒΒΒ so he can get to the bottom, and then both the left and right tunnels have their pitfalls! it's easy to get stuck here!

quick speed in a narrow maze = increased danger to get caught! plus, Κ needs a good route where he gets all the ΑΑΑ. the timer is not super strict, though, so if the last missing Α happens to be at the other side of the vave, there's still a chance to get it in time (but then he needs to be quick!)
