LIZARDITE IS A VARIANT OF SERPENTINE, AND PERHAPS THE MOST RECOGNIZABLE FORM OF SERPENTINE, WHICH IS IN TURN DERIVED FROM SERPENTINITE. THERE ARE INFLECTIONS OF BROWN AND YELLOW IN THE CRYSTAL. IT IS FORMED FROM HYDROTHERMAL METAMORPHISM OF MINERALS SUCH AS OLIVINE AND PYROXENE, BUT ONLY IN ULTRABASIC ROCK.  
  
THE NAME OF THIS MINERAL WAS DERIVED FROM THE DISCOVERY ORIGIN, THE LIZARD PENINSULA IN SOUTHERN CORNWALL.  
  
LIZARDITE AND ANTIGORITE EXISTS IN METASTABILITY, BUT CAN TRANSFORM INTO ANTIGORITE AT HIGH TEMPERATURES. IT IS COMMONLY FOUND WITHIN OPHIOLITE, AND ALONGSIDE MAGNETITE.  
  
IT HAS A MOHS HARDNESS OF 2.5.
