the original use of the "S" was for serpentine, but when I learned that it actually had a subgroup, it wasn't until after I had established tiger's eye as the T, because I didn't want another green, that I realised that I could've put this in place. instead, S was sapphire, T was tiger's eye. But for  krissz  a-z, that became stichtite and triphane, respectively.  
  
tsavorite is a subset of grossular, a calcium-aluminum variety of garnet. the greenish colour is due to the presence of trace levels of chromium and vanadium. it is named in honor of tsavo east national park, located in kenya.  
  
because it is a garnet subtype, it has a mohs hardness of 7.

also, another subnote: during alchemyst dig 3, I didn't like the original presentation of cave L, which was supposed to be lapis lazuli. In retrofit, I repurposed the cave and named it after lizardite, which is a serpentine ;)
