Now you're probably thinking, "isn't lapis lazuli a rock and not a gemstone?" You're right! Lapis lazuli is formed by other minerals, but is often known for its intense blue hues. this semi-precious stone has been used in the formation of ultramarine pigment, a very expensive blue pigment.

What lapis lazuli does have, however, is a 25-40% concentration of the mineral gemstone lazurite, which makes up for the bulk of lapis' blue hue. Some samples of lapis also contain calcite for whitish streaks, sodalite for a more solid blue, and pyrite for yellowish streaks.

the most notable application of ultramarine is johannes vemeer's "girl with a pearl earring".

the mohs hardness of lazurite, the primary component of lapis lazuli, is 5-5.5.
