magnesite is the mineral form of magnesium carbonate. normally colourless, it is often seen as a pale brown mineral that sometimes has other faint light red colors simply due to the impurities of the mineral. while often occuring as veins, magnesite also occurs as a secondary carbonate found within soil, where it is deposited as a consequence of magnesium-bearing minerals by carbon dioxide found within groundwater.

it is mainly formed via talc carbonate metasomatism of peridotite and other ultramatic rocks. by nature, it is brittle.

it has a mohs hardness of 3.5.
