I forgot the names of those formations, but I just randomly got a false-positive on a 9-fly formation, where there are 2x 4-Ζ and the fifth becomes a free rider (left side, top fly). It gets blocked by the left 4-Ζ and waits for another cycle. It'd normally form the 5Ζ on the right

veeeeeeery interesting! :d

the right dff is a glider-f5. the left one looks like two crawling-f4 plus the free rider. analysis follows :d

yup indeed: the left dff shows two independant crawling-f4's which carry a free rider together.

the right formation shows the (failed) attempt to let the extra Ζ free-ride on just one crawling-f4. problem: the extra Ζ will influence and break the crawling-f4 quickly. instead, the 5 ΖΖΖΖΖ will then form a glider-f5 together.

so the left dff is a new free-rider formation which will be the topic of a future episode on Arno 's dff forum thread! :d
