sapphire is a variant of corundum. being the representation of 9 on the mohs scale when referencing equivalent hardness between minerals, it is a precious gemstone. its name is a reference to the metamorphic rock known as lapis lazuli, which is also bluish. the only mineral gemstones harder than sapphire is diamond (at 10) and moissanite (at 9.5).  
  
the other gem variety of corundum is ruby; however, it is red due to the presence of chromium.  
  
it is possible to produce synthetic sapphires in a similar fashion that synthetic rubies are produced.  
  
the blue color may be due to the inclusion of iron and titanium.
