tiger's eye, a subset of quartz that it usually more of a metamorphic rock than a gemstone, is so named due to the mineral's ability to exhibit a cat's eye effect. this is commonly referred to as chatoyancy. it is often used in jewelry when it is given a cabochon polish to further express this effect.
