"das haus vom nikolaus" (the house of st. nicholas) is a german drawing game where the goal is to draw an eight-line-house in one stroke, while saying the eight syliables "das ist das haus vom ni-ko-laus". the tricky question is where to start to draw the house!

in english language you might say "this is the house of san-ta claus" while drawing the house :)

i was surprised when i read on the internet that this game seems to be such a german thing :d

it would much interest me if you know this drawing game and if yes, if you connect it to st. nicholas or santa claus as well :d

i have seen this puzzle before but the shape is usually described to be an open envelope or something like that. if i recall correctly, i have never seen it described as someone's house :)

nesdori : VERY INTERESTING! I ALSO CHECKED HOW THIS DRAWING GAME IS CALLED IN DIFFERENT OTHER LANGUAGES:

\ ON THE FRENCH WIKIPEDIA, THIS IS ALSO DESCRIBED AS "THE PROBLEM TO DRAW AN EVVELOPE". I HAD NEVER LOOKED AT IT THIS WAY BEFORE, BUT YES, IT LOOKS PRETTY MUCH LIKE AN OPEN ENVELOPE, A VERY COOL ALTERNATIVE FOR SEEING IT AS A HOUSE! :D

\ HOWEVER, I FOUND A REFERRANCE TO A HOUSE ALSO IN THE DUTCH WIKI, WHERE IT'S CALLED "HUIS MET EEN KRUIS" (HOUSE WITH A CROSS), A VERY PRECISE DESCRIPTION AND A NICE RHYME IN DUTCH LANGUAGE :D
Arno , Helena , NOW IT WOULD INTEREST ME A LOT IF YOU ALSO GREW UP WITH THIS GAME AS CHILDREN? :D

\ ON THE OTHER HAND, I COULDN'T EVEN FIND AN ARTICLE ABOUT THIS GAME IN THE ENGLISH WIKI.

IT SEEMS THAT THE DEGREE OF POPULARITY DIFFERS A LOT FROM COUNTRY TO COUNTRY. UNFORTUNATELY, I COULDN'T FIND A LOT OF INFORMATION ABOUT THE GAME'S HISTORY, SO ITS ROOTS DON'T SEEM COMPLETELY CLEAR.

heywood : yes, me too as a child, and i always forgot where to start :d
