another art cave. this time "girl with a pearl earring" by johannes vermeer. i actually tried this one already after mona lisa but i wasn't fully happy with the result then and just skipped it. but after Arno told me that he tried to "bd-objectize" exactly the same painting i gave this one more chance. the painting is a little bit too complex to be represented with 4-color bd-objects. the girl's hair, scarf and clothes are actually very close to the original painting but her face lacks the liveliness of the painting and is pale. it's like "no make-up" version of the painting :) still, it's not that bad so i decided to publish this so that Arno can compare this to his experiments.

the algorithm chose one of colors very cleverly. it's the bluish white color used on the sleeve, on the face, on other highlights and on the scarf. the white color on girl's forehead and the scarf is mostly the same color although it looks both white and blue! in clean objects like amoeba it looks white but on slime where there is dark "s" in the middle in the preview mode, the color looks bluish. even if you take a look on the bigger preview image, it's still odd how different the color looks in amoeba and slime. the algorithm doesn't know anything about human visual perception and it doesn't try to fool us. i just noticed by doing euclidian color distance calculations that blueish white is actually nice color to represent multiple mixed colors needed on this image.

the cave itself shouldn't be too frustrating this time. the amount of req. diamonds is quite high, that really is not problem because there are big swarms of butterflies but they are not an easy target. the exit is quite nasty as well but doable :)
these art caves have been quite repetitive because there have been lots of diamonds and flies in each. i hope the next one will be different :)

ah, looks great; way better than my casual attempts with free online tools. ;-)

in particular the eyes look very good i.m.o. and also the pearl earring is well recognizable.

also funny indeed that the slime looks more blue and amoeba more white. :-D

another beautiful art cave for the bd museum. thx nesdori ! :-D

Arno , yes the blueish white color also have a important role as highlighter. the eyes and the pearl earring gain a lot from it. also it brings some liveliness on the face. actually, most of the best color combinations didn't have white color but they had more blueish color and because of that they were noticeable more flat and not that interesting although the scarf color was closer to the painting.

btw, if anyone has an idea about an image or painting which you think would be a great art cave, let me know. darkstoorm previously suggedted abstract art. he probably meant to challenge the algorithm with some very colorful and complicated piece of art but on the other hand there are also very simple abstract paintings. i checked some of them but i didn't found anything that would instantly caught my eye. i also tried some cartoon figures like Donald duck; quite nice result as you might presume :)

i'm wondering how black & white images would do. for example, i was thinking about the work of m.c. escher, but probably these images are too detailed. perhaps some excerpts from them would do well.

ideas for abstract art: mondriaan's 'grey tree' or 'red tree' :-)

i actually tried some black & white classic images like charlie chaplin etc. but none of those was "wow!" enough although they were quite good. i'll check out your recommendations.. :)

Hmm, I randomly typed "old painting" and there was some good stuff. I liked the "Old Man" by Dr.uday Bhan, but that might be too detailed.

uday bhan singh has lots of different old man -paintings. but sounds good because there have been 3 woman art caves so far, for the sake of gender neutrality time for an old man! :)

# .font: font.text_1
Arno , well done! :) did you already know where the exit is? it's quite easy if you kill some bflies above it and leave some abone a pile of diamonds and then just drop & bomb a path to the exit. that's the intended finish :)

# .font: font.text_1
well, actually i wasted 2 runs searching for the exit. i expected it somewhere else. :-)

Also i found a diamond path with a dead end. that would have been a nice location for the exit as well, but there's no t-wall there unfortunately.

when i discovered the exit for the first time i could not create a path anymore. but indeed, your description corresponds to the way i solved it eventually. in fact, the first part of my run consists of preparing a free path to the exit. (and the second part grabbing \\\) :-)

enrico : wow, great! it's not easy at all to collect enough diamonds and find the exit. if you are going to try again, i recommend planning your actions in the exit room so that it's easier to reach the exit. i wrote in previous comment what is the intended way to do it but there are also other ways.

i would say the same: Arno is clearly the best all-around boulder dasher. level a+ in all categories: solver, designer, researcher, video creator, forum keeper. truly an ambassador of bd. and donsan of course is clearly the second :)
