your "spider" is really interesting. i've been investigating how this dancing combination works by sketching all stages on paper. i found that the first 4 frames are unique and end up in a repeating loop of 3 frames where the group moves 1 position upwards within each loop.  
  
while examining this loop in detail i noticed that this combination actually consists of 2 independent sets of 4 flies, like in tube 3 of my cave ( Arno  1000). both move asynchronously (i.e. they are mutually in a different stage during each frame), but they move so closely together that it looks like a single group of 8 dancing flies. at the points where flies from both groups touch each other, they do not influence each other's next move. whenever there is a conflict for the next position, this is always solved within the same frame; one fly makes room for the other. therefore, both sets move independently.  
  
it is possible to "connect" even more of such sets in a similar way. i've tested it with 12 and 16 fireflies but there is theoretically no limit.  
  
i'm curious to see your 5, 6 and 7-fly combos. i've tried to "derive" the 5-set from existing formations, but haven't been successful until now.

great analysis,  Arno ! i thought about the same thing that maybe the spider actually is a visual trick which looks like a single group but actually there are two groups close to other. i didn't check the interactions thoroughly yet so i wasn't 100% sure.

5 and 7 are clearly combinations of two groups, 6 is more interesting, i have to check it later and i'll post demo of it if it's genuine
