here's the solution on the bonus question:
as nesdori already said, rockford's wife is on f7. the cave symbolizes a chessboard and each \ is a piece. the position is the so-called "scholar's mate" where the white queen checkmates from f7 :d

a bonus question: in theory, is there any \ that can't be a white queen and which \:s are those? :)

and a final bonus question to the bonus question to the bonus question: assume that a1 \ is removed. how many \:s are there now which can't be a white queen? :)

 nesdori , i haven't forgotten your riddle here, and i like retro-analysis in chess :) let's see...

alright, d8 should be the only \ which theoretically can not be a white queen because of an illegal check. there's a chance to solve it by the last move pawn e7xd8, but in this case, the white pawn could not have gotten past the black e-pawn because no more pieces are missing on the board.

now for the second version...

without the a1 \, now every remaining \ can be a white queen. d8 is now possible - for example, white's d-pawn took black's e-pawn on e7 and black's queen on d8 while white's a1 rook might be on d2.

dustin , 1: d8 and 2: 0 were my answers as well. easy puzzles apparently but at least you didn't need a super computer this time :D

nesdori , nice little puzzles! i like retrograde analysis in chess :) for example, reconstructing given positions in a given number of moves from the starting position :)
