in situations like this sometimes the boulder moves first (= success) and sometimes the firefly moves first (= doom). does it just depend on which way the firefly is "pointing" when the dirt is taken?

hexwood: yes, indeed. If the Ζ faces up or right, it will come out first, otherwise not. so chances are 50/50 every time (unless you count frames and snap the Γ in a frame when the Ζ faces down or left.)  
  
btw, your run (as well as  Rob Gilbert 's) are the speedrun version, while the intended "safe" solution is shown in my run :)

This is the most dangerous positioning:

If you snap left, you 100% die if Ζ moves up no matter what you do.  
If you snap down, you still have a chance to move away if Ζ moves first (you can go left or up).  
  
THis cave is one of the most perfect examples of this :D
