ah, now let's still add some colour information, then i'm also motivated to find out all the etymologies :d

thematic colour: red (0 degrees on the colour wheel)
colour 0 (background): 75% saturation*, 12.5% value*
colour 1 (ΓΓΓ): 100%, 100% (pure red)
colour 2 (ΕΕΕ): 75%, 100%
colour 3 (ΔΔΔ): 50%, 100%

* saturation = "pureness". desaturating a colour means mixing it with white, which makes the colour brighter but also "grayer".
* value = brightness. increasing the value makes the colour brighter without desaturating it.
if both saturation and value are 100%, it means that it's the brightest possible pure form of the colour.

we can see that even the pure version of red is rather dark; this is because out of the three primary colours, green is by far the brightest (for human eyes) while red and blue are quite dark.

etymology of the word "red": it's one of the three oldest colours for which humans have invented a name (together with white and black). the word has been invented solely for the colour; it doesn't go back to any other meaning.

oxford definition: colour of blood
