benitoite is a cyclosilicate that has base barium and titanium. under ultraviolet light, fourescence causes the mineral to have a bluish-white colour. it forms in low-temperature, high-pressure zones. The name of this gemstone is based on its locality, which was found near the san benito river in california.  
  
Often mistaken for sapphire, benitoite is softer than sapphire, with a mohs hardness of 6. (sapphire, on the other hand, being a corundum deviant, has a hardness of 9.)
